Grim New Rules for NYC Paramedics: Don’t Bring Cardiac Arrests to ER for Revival

What to Know

As the coronavirus stretches New York City emergency rooms and paramedics to their limits, a regional EMT group has issued new guidelines almost unthinkable even days ago -- if someone's in cardiac arrest and you can't revive them in the field, don't bring them to the emergency room.

The newly implemented order that takes effect Thursday was implemented in an effort to control the surge of patients in hospitals due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The guidance from the Regional Emergency Medical Services Council of New York City applies to the city as well as Nassau and Suffolk counties. The group, known as REMSCO, is the state-designated coordinating authority for the region.

“ I think we can agree that this is a good example of NBC sensationalizing our current situation to stoke and take advantage of people’s fears and emotions.”

That is all nbc does. People need to get with the program.

Just to be clear, cardiac arrest means the heart has stopped.

It’s not a heart attack, or MI.

Generally speaking CA is dead. Most any CPR is for the family.

Sheer lunacy. So dying from heart disease is far less important than dying (or not dying) from coronavirus?
What kind of idiocy is that?

Right. If you are room temperature even the best ER cannot save you

Perhaps it depends on the age of the heart attack victim? My brother was in his early 40’s when he had a sudden heart attack. The paramedics worked on him and then the cardiac team at the hospital did as well. I think it gave my parents some small comfort that every measure was taken.

Even the fact that it happened while he was at work rather than when he was at home alone was a blessing Saved them from the torture of thinking that he could have been saved if he hadn’t been alone.

So the life of an Corid-19 victim is more valuable than a heart attack victim....or am I not understanding this order!!!

Yup.
New York is governed by lunatics.

That happens a lot more than people realize. My daughter is a paramedic. She explained this to me in very clear terms: if you get to a house and the heart has been stopped for more than a few minutes (cardiac arrest) you are not getting them back. Chest pains, clearly a “heart attack”, they will work on them as long as they are alive.

This is nothing more than a reporting change. Don’t transport dead people. Call the funeral home/ME.

Cardiac arrest is not a heart attack. Cardiac arrest is dead on the floor. Heart attacks is alive and in incredible pain. Very much alive and letting you know it hurts.

It might sound the same...but one is savable. The other is dead.

I’ve seen my Dad have a heart attack. I saw my father in law in cardiac arrest. Two very different scenes.

John Mendoza. He was on one of the HBO Young Comedians specials in the early 90’s IIRC. He was pretty funny. Check You Tube.

Cardiac arrest is survivable. Especially if brought to the ErR follow on to MICU

The headline is expected propaganda.

The last paragraph is all one needs to read. fDNY states EMTs are not to bring dead people to the ED

Just duh.
