Once again, these joint efforts saved lives. From 2014 to 2016, 28,000 people in West Africa contracted Ebola, far fewer than the 1.4 million the U.S. CDC had predicted near the beginning of the outbreak. In August 2014, 40 percent of Americans told pollsters that they expected a large outbreak of Ebola in the United States. Ultimately, only a single American died. On Obamas final trip to China in 2016, the two governments agreed to jointly finance a headquarters for the African Unions Centres for Disease Control and Prevention so that the continent could better fight infectious diseases itself.
The Trump administration is now trying to prevent that headquarters from being built. Thats just one example of the wrecking ball it has taken to public-health cooperation with Beijing. In 2018, The Washington Post reported that the Trump administration was dramatically downsizing the global epidemic prevention activities Obama had launched following the Ebola crisis. This year, even as the coronavirus outbreak was raging, Trump proposed cutting American funding for WHO in half.
These cuts have taken a particular toll on American initiatives in China. Since Trump took office, both the CDC and the National Institutes of Health have reduced their staff in Beijing. The National Science Foundation has shut its office in the country entirely. The sentiment inside the Trump administration, Bouey told me, is that if you have collaborative research with Chinese scientists, youre helping China to build their capacity, and thats not good for the U.S., because China is a strategic competitor.

Naw, “journalists” like this do it for free ‘cause they’re dems and hate America and...oh...orange man bad.
It is no longer just “death and taxes”. You can add anti-American media to that.
Does the corrupt MSM ever miss an opportunity to bash America, to bash anything to do with any Republican. They absolutely sicken me.
Well...the latest from the lefturd spin merchants.
May the Atlantic staff move to Wuhan.
Permanently.
No loss, and we’d have no regrets.

Did she receive them at work? That is so strange.
That’s a really “interesting” theory you’ve got there.
So how exactly, does the US bedding down with Communist China stick a needle in the globalist’s eye?
This guy is a leftist buffoon and a hack. I do not doubt China’s bribe money runs deep with this guy.
Id like punch the author in the mouth- just another tool trying score a hit.

Beinart’s labored concern:
But a cold war with China threatens more than American competitiveness. It threatens American liberty. At the dawn of the Cold War with the Soviet Union, Harry Truman created the Federal Employee Loyalty Program, which authorized the FBI to expel leftists from the federal bureaucracy. Later that year, his attorney general published a list of subversive organizations, forcing many of them to close, and the FBI began deporting politically suspect immigrants.
Another cold war could again threaten the rights of Americans suspected of sympathy for the enemy. Except that this time, the victims will likely be of Chinese descent. From the 1885 massacre of Chinese railroad workers at Rock Springs, Wyoming, to the Japanese internment during World War II to the murder of Vincent Chin by a laid-off autoworker during the panic over Japanese economic competition in the 1980s, the United States has a long history of anti-Asian bigotry, especially during periods of conflict with Asian governments.
Beinart is the author of the book The Good Fight: Why Liberalsand Only LiberalsCan Win the War on Terror and Make America Great Again, published in 2006. Drawing upon the work of the mid-century American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, Beinart argues that, paradoxically, the only way for America to distinguish itself from the predatory imperial powers of the past is to acknowledge its own capacity for evil.
Why would we bother to read anything this idiot writes. He hates America. He has somehow managed to find the connection between the imperial powers of the past and todays terrorists hiding in caves in the desert. Somehow I missed that. Such is the basis of his political philosophy.
No thanks.
The only thing I am getting is that the leftist author is taking the word of a Chinese American who works for the Rand Corporation, who spouts ridiculous Chinese government propaganda. I would bet, that you can find her bribed too.
They poisoned our kids with lead laden toys and we didn’t break with the PRCs.
They poisoned our families with poisoned sheet rock after Katrina and we didn’t break with the PRCs.
They poisoned our pets with poisoned pet food and we didn’t break with the PRCs.
NOW they have poisoned our entire nation with some bio weapon and we should still not break with the PRCs???
I guess the atlantic has never heard of Einstein!
The abbreviation for Bat Soup is BS~
Novel coronavirus cases could have been reduced by 95 percent had China responded to the outbreak just three weeks earlier than it did, a March 13 study by the University of Southampton has found.
