Some Western governments are turning to mass testing for the new coronavirus, hoping that quickly isolating more new carriers could halt its spread and allow the gradual reopening of stores, offices and factories.
With the economic cost of lockdowns rising and only faint signs of a slowdown in infections, officials and scientists in Europe, following the example of South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan, are advocating the new approach.

The sensible solution is Singapores - test EVERYBODY and identify who has it, along with their contacts. Only those people are required to isolate
Everybody else goes about their business and the economy stays OPEN
This idea of Dr Birx that you only test people with symptoms -severe symptoms - serves no purpose. EVERYBODY must be tested, so we know who has it and who doesnt, and the ones who dont have it are then free to go BACK TO WORK
Unfortunately, Trump himself said last week that mass testing is not necessary.
Hopefully, somebody will make the case to him soon.
“This idea of Dr Birx that you only test people with symptoms -severe symptoms - serves no purpose.”
Maybe because of the shortage of tests at that time.
Test everyone. Healthy go back to work or fishing. Sick ones get gin & tonic
So will an armband or a pin like “I voted” be put on us with a date we passed the non-virus test? Then we can work or play or shop?
Then one hour into that day we catch it (God forbid).
...if it wasnt for all the red tape.
The problem isnt tests. If you use tests to control an epidemic you need an army of people to follow up on contacts. A literal army. Of course, theres a lot of folks with nothing to do...
The country is gonna soon need a whole lot of Public Health Employees, I would think.. restaurant inspections, pursuing contact cases, documenting quarantines, and, yes, maybe even high intensity testing with a good to be out stamp. Who knows. The entire world is gonna change.
Yes, you get a little tattoo on your forehead,
The CDC/NIH/FDA have been acting stupidly.
It is a necessary thing to do and hopefully someday - and soon - the USA will do it too. But there is the issue of scale and that is why it will take some time.
The problem is our population is so big and so spread out and Labs are already so overwhelmed. Then the whole question of tracking the positives and enforcement...a nightmare. The get back to work part is right though and soon. Slow it down for a few weeks and then we got to get back to business.
random testing to see how widespread....if widespread, have the vulnerables stay home and isolate....
but no, we had to do the opposite of what is rational.
btw, I think Trump has done great under the pressure...he needs to get us back to work though...sooner better than later...
That's largely HER fault.
The CDC/NIH/FDA should have had developed processes to quickly roll out test should something like SARA/MERS appear again.
I think they had ten years that they frittered away on Global Warming and gunz instead of getting technology in place.
Too close to home. NY and CA are probably coordinating that with the DNC tonight.
But there is the issue of scale and that is why it will take some time.
Start with a few cities at a time.
Mass testing is the only strategy that gets us out of the death grip of the Fauci-Blix “models” Those models predict mass infections if the economy isn’t shut down. But if you test everybody and locate - and isolate - the people who have it, you can open up the economy without those mass infections.
That's largely HER fault.
The CDC/NIH/FDA should have had developed processes in place to quickly roll out tests in high volume should something like SARS/MERS appear again.
I think they had ten years that they frittered away on Global Warming and gunz instead of getting technology in place.
I meant, Fauci-Birx models
According to Fauci, they were on schedule and then a defect was discovered in the initial rollout.
A functioning media would be informing us what exactly went wrong.
Trump needs to get some other scientists into the mix, and up on the stage. He needs to get some respected psychologists/psychiatrists to talk at the White House briefings about the scale of suicides and drug addiction that mass unemployment will trigger.
Fauci and Brix are up in ivory towers. That these two people , alone it seems, are able to command us to close our businesses, abandon our jobs, and “shelter” inside like internees in WWII, is unbelievable.
