Traffic at Walmart Inc., Costco Wholesale Corp. and Target Corp. dropped for the first time in the weeks since the coronavirus pandemic ramped up in the U.S., according to Placer.ai.
Walmart WMT, 0.871% traffic was down 6.7% year-over-year for the third week of March. The previous week, traffic was up 18.4%.
At Costco COST, 0.831% , traffic fell 8.7% year-over-year for the third week of March. The second week of March, traffic jumped 34.7%.
And at Target TGT, 1.818% , traffic slumped 20.5% in the third week of March after climbing 19.2% year-over-year the previous week.
“There is a downside to stocking up for the long haul,” wrote Ethan Chernofsky, vice president of marketing for Placer.ai, in a post on the company’s blog.
Placer.ai is a retail intelligence company.
“Once you have all the things you need, there is little need for more visits,” Chernofsky wrote.

For what its worth I’ve been trying to schedule a Walmart grocery pick-up for four days and there has not been a single time slot available.
Yup. I'm even bumping into stuff left over from the 2009 pandemic.

No, it is because they close much earlier and not as many can get there. Also they limit the number of people that can get in.
Many are simply going to the dollar stores instead.

Man, I’m really out of step. We’ve been avoiding the whole “hoarding” thing, but in re-evaluating where we are headed for the future, I’m worried about the coming worldwide economic crash. So my wife and I decided yesterday to make a costco run this afternoon. “
We’re kinda like the folks, after a temporary run-up, getting the hell out of the stock market again.
This thing is entering phase two. That’s the bad one where the effects of the economies and tax revenues collapsing starts taking its toll on the average person - working or not. We are in the eye of the storm, and it’s been building.
My son works at Costco. He says the store is now very quiet. They have tons of shipments coming in are now filled to the gills with everything, except Costco TP, hand sanitizer, and Clorox wipes.
Plus the initial paranoia is receding.
I”m marketing some slip covers so you can use stacks of toilet paper for furniture. I’m gonna be rich.
One of which is Costco has stated it will not accept returns on paper towels, toilet paper, tissue, or bottled water.
I’m frankly more concerned about the other panicked idiots in the store than the virus.
We finally got tp yesterday.
