The Earth wobbles on it's axis, like a top, and the axis describes a circle that takes 25000 + years to complete. The north star becomes vega, every 12 thousand years, then back to polaris.
The polar caps are still there, but moved over, so the current poles are in a more temperate climate.
Add some continental drift over 90 M years, and you are bound so find stuff under the current ice.
