ST. LOUIS (AP) — With millions of people suddenly out of work and rent due at the first of the month, some tenants are vowing to go on a rent strike until the coronavirus pandemic subsides.
New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and St. Louis are among many cities that have temporarily banned evictions, but advocates for the strike are demanding that rent payments be waived, not delayed, for those in need during the crisis. The rent strike idea has taken root in parts of North America and as far away as London.
White sheets are being hung in apartment windows to show solidarity with the movement that is gaining steam on Twitter, Instagram and other social media sites. Fliers urging people to participate are being posted in several cities, including bus stops in St. Louis, where 27-year-old Kyle Kofron still has his job at an ice cream factory, but his three roommates have suddenly found themselves unemployed. Their property manager so far hasn’t agreed to a payment plan, Kofron said
“For me personally, with everyone losing their jobs and unable to pay, it’s really the only thing we can do,” Kofron said of the strike. “It’s just like we the people have to do something. We just can’t stand idly by while the system takes us for a ride.”
Stay-at-home orders and strict limits on gathering sizes have forced shops, restaurants and bars to shut down indefinitely. Many service industry workers thrust into unemployment are living paycheck-to-paycheck in the best of times. Now, many say they don’t have the money to pay rent.

What better time to ‘strike’ than when the FED has ordered a stop to foreclosures AND evictions.
To bad they didn’t specify that ILLEGALS would not come under the no eviction rules.
Just another step in having them ‘sneak across the border to Mexico’ and hope to make it home....
In Australia, and also I think in Ireland, it is being made unlawful to evict tenants, during this period of shut down. So, that is almost asking for a rent strike. Why should they pay, if they can stay on regardless? Of course, as the govt is preventing many people working, they ought to bear the cost.
I’m in a bind. Tenant broke lease. I have a new prospective tenant, but there is no way to force rent payments for at least 3 months (and I bet that gets extended). Do I go ahead and rent it out anyway???
Here too. 3 month no eviction.
Because as soon as the ban on evictions gets lifted we landlords will be in rent court getting evictions, money judgments and ruining credit. These deadbeats are getting help from the government, but we landlords are not. They can pay their damn rent or suffer the consequences.

But it figures...all those cities are hand me out cities. “enough” isn’t in their vocabulary.
Most importantly, make sure the new tenant has a secure job. Second, perhaps put a provision in the new lease in capitalized, bold letters that the tenant specifically waives any government protection against eviction due to the C-virus. It would depend on the judge, but this would at least give you an argument in support of eviction despite the prohibition.

If the government takes your house by eminent domain , for some public purpose like a road, you get paid by the taxpayers
What we’ve got now with these shutdowns is government taking people’s jobs away and leaving them destitute. Yes, they deserve to be financially helped and have their rent paid if they’re otherwise going to end up homeless. They aren’t welfare cases who don’t want to work - they’ve had their livelihoods and incomes destroyed by government decree
Th people doing this are not ‘civil’.

Has the government ever closed your job and told you that you can’t work for two months or more, forbidden you from earning a living?
I’m assuming you’re job isn’t affected by the shutdowns, or you’re not in a shutdown state, or you’re retired.
When the government takes away people’s right to earn a living and feed and house themselves, then it owes them compensation - just like if it took away your home by eminent domain
If it happens (and it doesn’t “have” to happen) it will start with the usual suspects; but, if critical infrastructure starts to fail, and supply chains start to break, you may meet some of the nicest people at the riots.
