California public school campuses are unlikely to reopen for the remainder of the academic school year in response to the coronavirus pandemic, state Supt. of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond said Tuesday in a letter to school district officials.
“Due to the current safety concerns and needs for ongoing social distancing it currently appears that our students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the school year,” Thurmond wrote.
Earlier, Thurmond had resisted suggestions that there was no hope for returning to campus. His letter represented a shift in direction and echoed views that Gov. Gavin Newsom expressed two weeks ago, which the governor reiterated Tuesday.
Newsom said at a briefing that an announcement on the fate of the school year could come “in the next day or two.”
Seven states have already shut down campuses for the remainder of the school year, according to tracking by Education Week. Others appear headed in that direction.

School districts have yet to receive firm state guidance on how students should be graded, how attendance requirements will be modified and how graduation requirements could be affected, said L.A. school board President Richard Vladovic.

Newsom acknowledged that much work needs to be done to make sure that instruction is reaching students.

On the bright side, it took California longer to do this than several other States (including mine). Usually California leads the way on idiotic decisions.
The positive benefit of this is that the kids won’t be Marxist brainwashed this semester. Gives us time to reeducate them with the truth.

well that is a good point....the more the kids are away from the leftist school environment, the better and happier they will be....but the school taxes should be slashed....we don’t need to fund what is not being provided...
This makes me very angry because it is completely unnecessary. No doubt driven by teachers unions who fund the Sacramento rats and banked Tony’s campaign. Our kids will be permanently behind except for the wealthy ones that attend private schools

I don’t think any private school is open in CA...
I know that Mater Dei (Santa Ana) and Harvard-Westlake are closed indefinitely...
I do not think any teacher in CA is taking a pay cut because the school is shut down...
I believe many teachers will be asked to take pay cuts very soon...
I believe that many CA school districts will have financial problems in the next several months...
State is not collecting much tax revenue right now...
School officials are talking about providing internet access to poor students for online learning...
There was an article, in LA TIMES, about how many LA Unified students had no access to internet...
I am skeptical about online learning for K through 8 grade...I think most high school kids are fine with online learning.
Football probably won’t happen this year also. I don’t care about the NFL kneelers, but I still watched College.
They won’t be taught about weirdo sex either. The teachers will have to get real jobs. This is a good thing.
The kids are FAR BETTER OFF with no school, than with what’s going on in those government institutions. Hopefully the virus lingers for a while, at least enough to prevent those horrific facilities from re-opening for a few years.
Two of my grandsons go to a private school in CA. They have been out of school since early March because this hit at the start of their spring break. The older one is a senior and the rest of his senior year including graduation is shot. The younger one is a junior and won’t be able to take the SATs or ACTs so now colleges will have to rely solely on grades. My daughter isn’t even sure the school will reopen in the fall as many of the students are from around the US and the world.
Fortunately, they are finishing their current classes online.
Yeah, I have four grandkids here 12-18.
