Exclusive: Captain of aircraft carrier with growing coronavirus outbreak pleads for help from Navy

Note: This story has been updated with comments from the U.S. Navy.

The captain of a nuclear aircraft carrier with more than 100 sailors infected with the coronavirus pleaded Monday with U.S. Navy officials for resources to allow isolation of his entire crew and avoid possible deaths in a situation he described as quickly deteriorating.

The unusual plea from Capt. Brett Crozier, a Santa Rosa native, came in a letter obtained exclusively by The Chronicle and confirmed by a senior officer on board the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, which has been docked in Guam following a COVID-19 outbreak among the crew of more than 4,000 less than a week ago.

“This will require a political solution but it is the right thing to do,” Crozier wrote. “We are not at war. Sailors do not need to die. If we do not act now, we are failing to properly take care of our most trusted asset — our Sailors.”

Absolutely dead on, true! Thought this throughout my posting of this. And this “story” is still running on national radio— complete with “confirmed victims” and “trying to find hotel rooms in Guam for the sailors”.

Unbelievable. Sure— if they are infected then spread it all around Guam to further impact an important base and support of our forces in the mid Pacific. Perfect. And perfectly stupid. Get them infected, and infect the Guam populace.

If true— at all on the story or any part of this. If it is “placed” then it could be a most excellent “sting” against commies who want the US out of Guam. Our airbase also. The chinks are watching either way. I do think it is FAKE news— does not ring true in my 200 year plus Navy family every generation, mind.

thanks.

there’s this today: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-usa-navy/navy-does-not-rule-out-punishing-captain-of-carrier-who-wrote-scathing-letter-idUSKBN21J6LQ

I’m inferring that the letter is legit...

I’m still scratchin my head why a Capt. would wreck his career unless he has no shot at Admiral?

Letter didn’t pass the smell test but apparently was written by CO.
