Of course, Captain had to peruse all news before released Yes, but why tell the Captain if the crew is not allowed to know? Perhaps it's not a case of "allowing" but telling the crew is at the discretion of the Captain.

The guys on a submarine that is almost completely qualified submariners think this article is pretty absurd. Boats get daily updates and this is not something that would be kept from them.
Not necessarily. Most of our nuke subs stay pretty deep, and they don't have normal communication. running an ELF antenna, the only messages they really get are "Surface. Longer message waiting.". By now, I would guess most of them have received some news, but even on the shorter-wave comm systems, data space is valuable so it's likely just a small part of briefing on possible contention with China. And, likely only the top couple of people on board know much.
