Government tracking how people move around in coronavirus pandemic

The federal government, through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and state and local governments have started to receive analyses about the presence and movement of people in certain areas of geographic interest drawn from cellphone data, people familiar with the matter said. The data comes from the mobile advertising industry rather than cellphone carriers.

The aim is to create a portal for federal, state and local officials that contains geolocation data in what could be as many as 500 cities across the U.S., one of the people said, to help plan the epidemic response.

The data—which is stripped of identifying information like the name of a phone’s owner—could help officials learn how coronavirus is spreading around the country and help blunt its advance. It shows which retail establishments, parks and other public spaces are still drawing crowds that could risk accelerating the transmission of the virus, according to people familiar with the matter. In one such case, researchers found that New Yorkers were congregating in large numbers in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and handed that information over to local authorities, one person said. Warning notices have been posted at parks in New York City, but they haven’t been closed.

Gee, anyone think google is involved? I mostly have my "location" off on my phone. When it's turned on at all. Which isn't that often.

Your phone “turns off”? What brand is it?

I have an iPhone. I use it for gps tracking in the woods.

One time the power went out in the middle of a trail ride. Later, when I powered up the phone, it somehow had still tracked the entire trip even though the battery supposedly had died and the phone was shut down.

Yep, unless you can physically remove the battery, like on old “dumb” phones, it’s working overtime.

It may come to a point where it’s just fully charged up and then tossed onto New York or California bound 18-wheeler or freight train.
Let em “track” that awhile.

12 years ago, Hollywood showed us what can be accomplished when everyone's cell get used for real time mapping. And the audience said "Wow! Cool!"

I used to worry about that stuff.
Then I realized that everything I have is spying on me.
And pretty much nobody cares.

Unless you take the battery out, this has been common knowledge ever since there were cellphones. Now that it can be used for common good, like tracking down sotted liberals spreading the Kung flu, suddenly there is a how-dare-you attitude among the flock.

Turning your “location” off does not stop them from tracking which cell towers your phone hits.

A big chunk of the population grew up and lived most of their lives without cell phones.

Just leave the cell phone at home when you go out. It’s not that difficult.

Agreed. If someone is that interested to track me knock yourself out - and you just might, as in not being able to stay awake or stand the excitement.

I don't take any real measures to prevent tracking. I figure if I appear to be a nominal case, no-one would go to any great lengths to track me over and above the usual. Now, if I were to ever need to be "off grid" and un-findable for any reason ... that complacency you build up with any interested parties works in your favor.

Until that one fatal time they do care. :)

You’ll never think it’s coming.

Which is what works for them if you do ever become ‘interesting’ to them.

Ever wonder how our iphone map feature shows traffic delays ? Number of iphones jammed up showing red, or orange indicating slow. That’s my assumption.

I think the government guys saw your expression when they remotely turned on your laptop camera. They know you really do care.

Just kidding---I think.
