Lockdown, what lockdown? Sweden's unusual response to coronavirus

While swathes of Europe's population endure lockdown conditions in the face of the coronavirus outbreak, one country stands almost alone in allowing life to go on much closer to normal.

After a long winter, it's just become warm enough to sit outside in the Swedish capital and people are making the most of it.

'Each person has a heavy responsibility'

Public health authorities and politicians are still hoping to slow down the spread of the virus without the need for draconian measures.

There are more guidelines than strict rules, with a focus on staying home if you're sick or elderly, washing your hands, and avoiding any non-essential travel, as well as working from home.

Sweden has so far reported nearly 3,500 cases of the virus and 105 deaths.

"We who are adults need to be exactly that: adults. Not spread panic or rumours," Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said in a televised address to the nation last weekend.

"No one is alone in this crisis, but each person has a heavy responsibility."

Meanwhile, Swedes love the outdoors and officials have said that keeping people physically and mentally healthy is another reason they're keen to avoid rules that would keep people cooped up at home.

"We have to combine looking at minimising the health effects of the virus outbreak and the economic impacts of this health crisis," says Andreas Hatzigeorgiou, CEO at the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce.

"The business community here really thinks that the Swedish government and the Swedish approach is more sensible than in many other countries."

So, my message is that, let's get back to work, let's get back to living, let's be smart about it, and those of us who are 70 plus, we will take care of ourselves but don't sacrifice the country. Don't do that. Don't ruin this great American dream." ----- Lt Gov Dan Patrick the next Governor of Texas, the sooner the better.

My impression is that 1) the virus is incredibly infectious so that sooner or later most people are going to get it any and 2) far less harmful on average than it was made out to be. With this in mind I think the Swedes have the right idea here.

There shouldn’t be restrictions on outdoor activities.

Have they raised a crop of fools that go around licking things?

That is one symptom of the illness we have.

Media and Hollywood is another.

Coronavirus isn’t our biggest problem.

In places right here in America people are being arrested for exercising outside. Let’s take healthy people and turn them into unhealthy depressed shut-ins that’s a great solution

Coronavirus isn’t our biggest problem.

Correct. It is the late empire combination of making gods of ourselves, public school indoctrination of foolish beliefs, garbage popular culture, and the open celebration of vice.

On the whole, we lack virtue. All civilizations sink back into slavery once they lack virtue. Unfortunately, it is only in slavery that people turn away from vice and strive for Godliness.

It's not difficult to imagine that the sun is about to set on the American Experiment.

Asymptomatic persons with these viruses are 85% not spreading the infection, because until actual symptoms begin the state of the virus is not yet viral shedding. Once symptoms start viral shedding has usually started, and then they can be infectious to others.

Yes, some people with very healthy immune systems can have contact with the virus and never become ill, remain asymptomatic. And others contacted by the virus may only be asymptomatic for the 2 to 11 days (5 avg) between contact with the virus and onset of symptoms. From what we are obviously seeing though there is a very good many of the former among the asymptomatic.

We’ve pulled through much and we can get through this but not whole and not unchanged.

Change for the better but jaded.

That’s my opinion.
