One of the few useful numbers that CDC had to work with early on was the known number of cases worldwide.
By February 29th it was 82,000. Compare that to its close cousin SARS, it’s over 10 times the total in half the time. SARS infected 8,800 by July 2003. Both viruses first popped up in November or December.
What wasn’t clear is the death rate of Covid-19. SARS killed 775 people, a death rate of nearly 9%. Covid-19 now appears to be about a third as lethal. With more widespread testing that number could drop further.
But despite the lower death rate Covid-19 poses a bigger problem because of that very high rate of transmission. It can overwhelm medical systems by sheer numbers of sick people all at once. So people who could live will die because they won’t get treated.
Covid-19 actually is a SARS virus. Covid-19 is the name of the pandemic. SARS-CoV-2 is the name of the virus causing it.
What is the estimate of total infections in the US?
And now the virus is all over the country.
