LAS VEGAS, N.M., March 25 (Reuters) - At a truck stop here, a driver sprays his shoes with disinfectant to protect himself and his partner from coronavirus, another laughs and sees no threat, while a veteran trucker says he's heading for the hills, in fear for his life.
They are some of the millions of U.S., Canadian and Mexican truckers tasked with hauling food and goods to keep grocery stores stocked and essential services running as over half the U.S. population is told to stay home to stop the virus' spread.
In a windy truck park by the side of an eerily quiet Interstate 25, drivers hold up masks and gloves given them by loved ones for protection. Others say they don't need them for a "virus panic" created by the media.
Like nearly all these truckers, Marvin Gakin, 71, is determined to keep working. He hauls beef and pork and recognizes his essential role if Americans are to eat.

A Big Thank You to All of Our Truckers!!
Thanks to the truckers.
We can do without congresscritters forever.
We can do without the liberal ill-educated media for 2x forever.
We can do without truckers for....perhaps a week?
Now, which profession is more valuable to you?
Truckers have to be happy that there is a lot less traffic on the road.
She can carry my load anytime.
Maybe a week or a little more out here in flyover country, but you would be talking days or maybe even hours in places like New York City and San Fransicko.
Many of them are still trucking past retirement age. When I suddenly became unemployed in the last days of the ObaMao administration because a crooked former employer wanted to steal my earned vacation and sick time, I was all set to go to truck driver school. I even had a state subsidy and school selected. Then Trump got elected and I got hired to a better paying job in my profession.
Yeah thanks to truckers.
My favorite local restaurant in this small town is Denny’s in the Flying J Truckstop.
But with Truckers coming from all across the country, there is no way I’m eating there. I’m not even getting take out.
I wonder about the truckers, are they still showering there?
I know they sanitize it between showers, but it still seems risky.
My facility unloads the trucks, prepares product and ships out product back into trucks. I would say 95% of product is from China. It’s surreal and unnerving. Most of us keep working as some refuse to work and keep walking out.
The Truckers, Nurses and Doctors are the heroes of this epidemic.
Also should mention grocery store employees.
Thank you all!
She is prettier than anyone I can think of innHollywood.
Truckers and railroaders... never take them for granted.
Watch out for the Continental Divide.
The ink is a killer.
Give a moment for us folks who work in housekeeping in hospitals(environmental services) we keep everything clean and sanitized. We do stuff as far as cleaning and handling things nurses don’t or won’t.
One of my kids has a really cool job. He’s an Astronautical Engineer who works at NASA doing flight operations for a few billion dollars worth of satellites.
Right now, he doesn’t have the most important job in the family. It’s one of my other kids, the trucker.
He delivers lumber. I told him that he’s responsible for keeping many men employed and able to feed their families.
