AUSTIN, Texas (CBSDFW.COM/CNN) On Monday, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick insisted hes all in on lifting social distancing guidelines amid the coronavirus pandemic in order to get the economy back up-and-running despite the fact that he and other senior citizens remain at high risk of contracting the deadly disease.
Patrick, who said he turns 70 next week, said people like him have to weigh the hazards to their personal health that the virus poses with the challenges to health of the American economy brought on by social distancing guidelines
No one reached out to me and said, As a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for your children and grandchildren? And if that is the exchange, Im all in, Patrick told Fox News.
Its just New York, who cares?
I’m from New York (not NYC). I care. And the fact that New Yorkers are being selfish and stupid by leaving to infect other areas is, I believe, criminal. I think DeSantis is doing the right thing with those coming by plane. I even think there should be stations at the borders to meet people.
I’m not saying there’s not an epidemic and we shouldn’t take precautions. Everyone has to be careful now. Everyone has to be be careful always during flu season.
(Tell it to Milan, Madrid, and New York doctors and nurses.)
Great. Let’s compare New York notes on April 8.
So you think some form of border control between American states is warranted, but it’s still just the flu?
When did that happen before?
Is Republican Gov. DeSantis part of the panic and hype machine trying to hurt Trump?
Don’t you see a split in your thinking?
Cognitive dissonance, some call it.
“Cognitive dissonance, some call it.”
“Logical”, some call it.
Ask them in Italy and Madrid.
Once hospitals are overrun with CV cases, people die from minor car accidents and coronary episodes etc, because there is not a bed anywhere for them.
So far, the “Just ignore it crowd” (including the leaders of China, Italy, Spain and the UK) become big-time believers when their hospitals are overrun and the bodies start to stack up.
That’s when leaders impose mandatory quarantine for social distancing, to flatten the curve.
So we have not seen a case of just totally letting CV run rampant and unchecked in the first world.
I suspect we will see this in countries without effective leadership or social controls. It’s spreading wild in the Philippines, Thailand is not far behind. Africa will follow. (Warm weather does not stop it, we know that from the Philippines.)
When it explodes in really poor countries, that’s when we’ll see the actual max death rates.
In first world countries, leaders slam the brakes on social interaction once the hospitals are overrun.
New York City is right where Italy was 22 days ago, and Madrid 8 days ago. We started the social distancing earlier in the process than they did (we had their example to study), so we bought some time and flattened the curve somewhat.
But thousands of already-infected people are still going to die in NYC, unless HQ+Zpac turns out to be a magic bullet.
And in the third world, all bets are off, and millions can die for sure. There is no way to practice social isolation in a third-world slum, and their hospitals are primitive adn minimal to begin with.
Let’s chat about NYC on April 8, shall we?
Please, no snarky humor like, “We’ll all be dead in 2 weeks.”
This is serious, so let’s be adults, okay?
April 8th.

C,mon travis, show us your new colored version of Michael Mann's globull warming hockey stick graph that will show we will all be dead by the second Tuesday of next week.
You love the doom and gloom of the hockey stick, double, double toil and trouble...
I literally laughed out loud at the CBS fear article title.
So refreshing to hear this common sense.
For prophylazis, 200mg per day or 200mg once per week plus a zinc supplement
Yeah, because a fatal disease that is doubling in cases every few days in real time right before our eyes is exactly like the global warming theory that temps might rise a few degrees over decades.
You are a moron if you think what is happening in real time now in Italy, Spain and now New York (and spreading across America) is analogous to the hypothetical long-term global warming threat.
One is a tiny storm cloud on the distant horizon. The other is a cult of killers shooting people randomly right now, a killer cult that doubles in numbers more than once a week.
The fact that you even make that absurd analogy between CV and global warming only points to your very low intelligence.
He isn't but you are.
You are just very well spoken and use graphs and foils to put forth your hysteria, while pretending to be a calming presence.
It is easy to see that NY is the hot bed of the chinavirus in the USA, anyone can look at the numbers.
The New Yorkers that are jumping on planes bound for Florida to the tune of 40,000 per day are potential carriers of the virus and should all be shot as they deplane.
What, too over the top?
Sent to gitmo, or maybe the swamps?
What is your solution Mr. graph man?
I lived in Manhattan back in the 90s, never did like most natives, so maybe sending one or two million into the Everglades with a canteen and a knife is not a bad start. S/Off {maybe}
There are NO easy solutions. More CV deaths, or a better economy. Less CV deaths, and a ruined economy. Shot in the leg with a .45, or in the shoulder with a 9mm. It’s a horrible choice either way.
But minimizing CV as “It’s just the flu” is sheer moronic idiocy.
As is your rhetorical absurdity to shoot deplaning NYers at the airport.
As is the theory that CV is just hype, a conspiracy to hurt Trump.
If you have better information than my graphs etc, please share them.
We could have rolled out massive testing a month earlier. We lost February. Here is why it matters. This is why South Korea is in much better shape than Italy, Spain or the USA.
I wasn't the one that posted the Michael Mann hockey stick style graphs that are so disavowed by you in this rant.
When you fail to convince by logic, you revert to name calling and pointing out your superior intelligence compared to my low intelligence.
OK, numbnutz, name calling is easy and I'll be here in two weeks with my low intelligence, and will examine the facts, so don't go into hiding.
A powerful argument against this is the example of Malaysia. They produce 2/3 of the world’s latex gloves. Under lockdown, they only have a two week supply.
We could have rolled out massive testing a month earlier.
Is this the same Trump that closed flights from china to the USA on 1/31/2020? Is that before February?
The USA didn't have the tests to "roll out" on a massive scale.
If we did, do you really believe that Trump, the guy that shut down travel from china, would have "listened to Rush" and not allowed hospitals and health care pros to test?
Do you really believe that Trump didn't want to know the truth?
And you have the balls to call me "Low Intelligence"?
Italy has 6,000 deaths. Thats the worst country. Still not justifiable to crap on the economy. This is so stupid and irresponsible.
We only had 5 deaths yesterday. This thing is over. Out of the deaths 4 were in california. New York had zero. Arizona had one. This according to worldometer.
