We have to let this thing run its course and try to mitigate it as much as possible. Physical containment is not possible.

I think Singapore and Hong Kong will likely start hydroxychloroquine + one additional medication treatments for any new cases that require hospitalization.

This is as expected.

The points of quarantines are to knock down the peaks to "flatten the curve" to keep the the medical care system from going into overload and vastly increasing the fatality rate.

When the rate drops the rules can be relaxed to allow industry and commerce to step into the breach and provide critical items and paychecks.

When the rates of infection rise again, the quarantine is reimposed to flatten the next peak.

Intermittent quarantines minimize loss of life while enabling the economy, that is to say the people, to stay afloat.

Each wave benefits from the lessons learned in the previous.

Hydroxycholoquine+azithomycin will likely save thousands in the second cycle for one example, for another a Canadian therapist figured out how to treat nine patients with a single respirator unit.

The third cycle will doubtless have their own wonder cure (Vitamin C+D Hammer?)

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

The false positive rate was 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's or one old fart’s life, it's worth it.

Quarantining and flattening the curve was never meant for beating this plague, only to slow it down so that the medical services wouldn’t be totally overwhelmed.

Without a vaccine or antibody to kill it or at least slow it down to a flu like manageable level, we’re stuck with choosing between being locked down and watch society wither away, or let it explode and watch society blow up.

Finding a drug to slow this thing down is of paramount importance.

I don’t see this as an unexpected development. Hong Kong and Singapore reacted very quickly at the outset and managed to stop community spread to a large extent.

But that means that the community remained vulnerable to the virus, so when they reopened for business, the inevitable happened. New entrants to the country re-introduced the virus to the community.

If they now repeat the process and are successful, it will have a third iteration the next time they re-open.

Italy went the opposite direction and let it surge. We can see the result there, and wouldn’t want to repeat it here in the U.S., obviously.

We’re sort of taking a middle ground. The social distancing and quarantining is hopefully “flattening the curve” but clearly the virus is proceeding through most of the community. Hopefully, the flattening will be sufficient to ease the burden on the healthcare system so everyone can be treated and, as hopefully, when we do return to work, we won’t get a higher peak of infections than the one already experienced prior to returning to work.

Lots of “hopefully”s up there, but it could work out for the best, under the circumstances.

Hard to find a nation-state with stricter hygiene rules than Singapore. It’s against the law to chew gum or not to flush a toilet.

When we end internal lock down, keep all the existing travel restrictions in place.
