No, they are not according to the CDC and WHO
The safety profile of hydroxychloroquine is actually quite good. I know three people who have been taking hydroxychloroquine for several years to treat lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. My friend who has been taking it for her RA has been on the drug for over 10 years and hasn’t had the first problem.
According to the CDC, the risk of toxicity in the first five years for someone without special risk factors is very low and measurable impairment from retinal toxicity occurs in less than one out of five thousand patients on extended regimens at standard doses. Hydroxychloroquine is not even in the top 100 drugs for retinal toxicity according to the National Registry of Drug-Induced Ocular Side Effects.
According to the CDC, off-label “compassionate use’ protocols on treatment of Covid-19 using Hydroxychloroquine have been consistent with recommendations for treatment of lupus and rheumatoid arthritis with some variation; 400mg BID on day one, then daily for 5 days; 400 mg BID on day one, then 200mg BID for 4 days; 600 mg BID on day one, then 400mg daily on days 2-5.
In conclusion, the six day treatment regimen for resolving cases of SARS-CoV-2 should pose little danger for patients other than those that have special risk factors... and all patients would be pre-screened to identify those risk factors as part of the protocol for determining suitability for treatment using hydroxychloroquine as a matter of course.
