The New Spanish Inquisition
Steyn On-line ^ | March 23, 2020 | Mark Steyn

As a new week begins, some Chinese virus notes:

~What can disease-riddled New York learn from Italy? Well, à propos the photo at right, how about hotter curfew enforcers? Jill Filipovic tweets:

I think I speak for all New Yorkers when I say, Spain, hi, can you deploy some of that in our direction? We will comply with your orders.

No disrespect, but I'm not sure figure-hugging plunging-cleavage uniforms would work with the one-man small-town police departments of my neck of the woods.

~There are now over 350,000 Politburo Pandemic cases in some 170 out of 200 countries. A week ago there were ten nations with over a thousand cases; today there are twenty-five. If you take the very woolly statistics seriously, New York City currently has the same rate of infection as Italy.

In Italy itself, infected doctors and nurses comprise eight per cent of new cases, and the hospitals are so overwhelmed that medical care is being denied to anyone over sixty. That's it: They don't ask you your symptoms or reach for the stethoscope; your date of birth determines whether you get in the door. A G7 health system is now a Great War triage field hospital. We were told this disease only impacts old people, but "old people" seems to be getting defined down from nonagenarians and octogenarians rather rapidly. When a venerable celeb in great shape steps out on the tiles, the Fleet Street tabloids coo that seventy is the new thirty; the way thing are going in the hospitals, thirty will be the new seventy.

~Fortunately, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer have a solution for the above. When it comes to the Coronavirus Bazillion Dollar Boondoggle Act, Congress remains deadloc... zzzzzzzzzzzz.

A waste of masks. Japanese bra-makers have already been making masks from bras for the last month.

Billy bob would be worried that his chest hair might get caught in the zipper of his jumper.

I was thinking it was the newest member of the Village People. Less than ideal weapons discipline he's got going on there.

Some companies are already producing medical face masks from brassiere parts — just like Steyn suggested.

Thats the Spanish Legion - still formally a “Foreign Legion”. They are a rather odd lot. This is not the standard Spanish army uniform.

This branch of the army was founded for service in Africa in the 1920’s. They were the core of the Nationalist armies of the Spanish Civil War. They still have a unique style and ideology. The uniforms were always “aggressively informal”. Among many other peculiarities.

And then there is this - the annual Holy Week procession in Malaga - a regimental tradition.

The way they are leaning on their rifles I can see why they have such high mortality stats.

Scripts and banners
yield honors to our dead

No one in the Third knew
who was that legionnaire
so bold and reckless
that the Legion enlisted.

No one knew his story,
plus the Legion supposed
that a great pain bit him
like a wolf, the heart.

More if anyone who was asked
with pain and rudeness he answered:

I’m a man who’s lucky.
wounded with a paw of fiera;
I’m a death boyfriend
you’re going to join in strong bond
with such a loyal companion.

When the rudest the fire was
and the fiercest fight
defending your Flag
the legionnaire advanced.

And without fear of the push
of the exalted enemy,
knew how to die like a bravo
and teaches her rescued.

And as he watered with his blood the burning earth,
murmured the legionnaire in a grieving voice:

I’m a man who’s lucky.
wounded with a paw of fiera;
I’m a death boyfriend
you’re going to join in strong bond
with such a loyal companion.

When, at last they picked him up,
between his chest they found
a letter and a portrait
of a divine woman.

And that letter said:
“... if God ever calls you
for me a position claims
I’ll go get you p___to.”

And on the last kiss I sent him
his last farewell consecrated him.

For coming to your side to see you
my most loyal companion,
I became a death boyfriend,
I shook it with a strong bond
and his love was my Flag

“El Novio de la Muerte”

Translation notes -
Tercio = Regiment, more or less - the Legion uses the archaic “Tercio” to refer to itself, a reference to the 16th-17th century organization of the Spanish infantry.

was biting him - an on-going condition

I am a man who fortune
wounded with a beasts claw (”fiera” is a general term for any of the big cats- lions, tigers, etc.)
I am a bridegroom of death
who will bind himself firmly
to such a loyal mistress. ( “companera” is an ambiguous way to refer to an informal lover - companion, literally, but more like “camp follower” in context)

Etc.

Spanish is remarkably similar to English (it is fundamentally so, in spite of appearances) but poetry needs more insight.
