Italy, Numbers, and Confusion: Why is Italy the Hotbed of COVID-19
PJ Media ^ | 22 Mar 2020 | Charlie Martin

Stripped of the panic, SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 — the new betacoronavirus that originated in China, and the disease the virus caused — are really fascinating, an exciting and important scientific detective story that someone, someday, will get to tell without ritualized stomping by various political factions. Probably not today, but someday.

Just in passing, let's make it easy for the Chinese propaganda arms, both in China and in New York, and note that this is, indeed, a virus from China. Specifically, it's a virus that originated in 中华人民共和国湖北省武汉市 (The City of Wuhan, the province of Hubei, in the People's Republic of China.) My preferred abbreviation will continue to be 功流感 (gong1 liu2 gan3) "work influenza" or "kung flu".

Accept no substitutes.

Now, here's one of the most interesting puzzles: Of all the locations with clusters of kung flu infections, Italy is the most active. Astonishingly so, with (as of 3/22/2020 @ 12:13 PM Eastern Daylight Time Z-4) 53,578 confirmed cases, and 4825 deaths. (As always, go to the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Dashboard for up to date numbers.)

Check out the number of workers in and around Milan that are on work programs out of China. By the time China made some announcements the virus was saturating this portion of Italy.

I was watching Northern Exposure, from 1990, with amusement as the main character recited the naming of disease strains.

There were positive news stories of China bringing in shiploads full of containers with respirators/ventilators and surgical masks already preloaded.....JMO.....like polio blankets for the Sioux, a present that keeps on giving. Add in the hug a Chinese day.

Italian government/health care system refused to allow hydroxychlorquine for 5-6 weeks? Any info as to whether they are using it now?

From another source:

Any observer of human behavior who has spent time in Italy knows that Italians have a compulsion to touch each other, embrace each other, talk to each other inches away. They have a compulsion for close personal proximity that other cultures would feel is an invasion of personal space. That’s the way Italians are, which is fine, even endearing, unless you’re transmitting deadly viruses.

I lived there for nine years. This is very true. I could be sitting in a restaurant as the dole customer. A couple of Italians come in and they invariably choose a table right next to me even with the entire restaurant otherwise empty.

....

No, not the way to look at this.
Made in Italy means a premium.
Keep the goods in Italy, import the workers from China, pay them much less. Voila!

However, the secret is now out and Lombardy, Florence will never be the same again.

Not just Italians. Basically Iran all the way to Spain, including all of Europe with a Mediterranean coastline.

Why Italy? Wuhan was essentially a sister city.

In this case they are putting the ‘Designed in Italy’ label which is below ‘Made in Italy’ in value. To negotiate the issue the Chinese has bought factories in Italy and moved their workers there so they are proudly labeling the product ‘Made in Italy’ and charge the premium price for it.
