Calculating the value of human life at $.02 per life we should just take everybody over 60 out and shoot them and let everybody get a two week cold. Devoid emotion it is the logical thing to do. Unfortunately we tend to be emotional. Myself, I have done parachuting, scuba diving, rappelling into caves, and mountain climbing. Understanding the risks and mitigating them into negligible lets you accomplish just about anything you desire. Rappelling without rope is an experience you only get once.
I am just guessing that you buy top quality equipment that is proven for the purpose, maintain or replace it when needed, take proper training from instructors who have themselves survived what they are teaching you to do, and make sure that you are fit for the purpose. As well, you probably don't do it when adverse conditions likely change the odds against success. But I'm just guessing that those "mitigating" actions are why you survive all of this.
