Washington (AFP) - The United States and China on Friday took their growing clash over the coronavirus pandemic to social media, with Beijing telling Secretary of State Mike Pompeo he was "lying through (his) teeth."
In an interview on Fox News, Pompeo said Beijing "wasted valuable days" after identifying the novel coronavirus by letting "hundreds of thousands" leave the epicenter of Wuhan to places including Italy, which has surpassed China as the country with the highest death toll.
"The Chinese Communist Party didn't get it right and put countless lives at risk as a result of that," Pompeo said.
Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying voiced anger on Twitter, writing in English: "Stop lying through your teeth!"
"As WHO experts said, China's efforts averted hundreds of thousands of infection cases," she tweeted.
She said that China first told the United States of the novel coronavirus outbreak on January 3, with the State Department alerting Americans in Wuhan on January 15.
"And now blame China for delay? Seriously?" she wrote.
State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus replied: "By Jan. 3, Chinese authorities had already ordered #COVID19 virus samples destroyed, silenced Wuhan doctors, and censored public concerns online."
Hua "is right: This is a timeline the world must absolutely scrutinize," Ortagus tweeted.
Already tense relations between the two powers have worsened over the pandemic, which China has appeared to bring under control but has severely disrupted life in much of the world and infected more than 10,000 people globally.

Well past time to completely disentangle ourselves from the chicoms.
When was this article written? The post says today, but 10,000 is a bit short of today's tally of 250,000.
IF China were smart, the CCP would admit exactly what it has done to the world and ask for forgiveness.
Instead, the incessant face saving will be their undoing.
Chuck Fina
It would not be hard for this to escalate into war with China. Once Americans start to see the true extent of the damage, they are going to blame the Chinese. They are going to hate the Chinese.
With nations fighting over very limited resources, it just will not take much.
The Chinese Communist Party is doubling down on damage control. They know that they completely screwed up the initial response. However, the Party continues to downplay the mistakes they made.
They lost credibility and are desperately looking for people on whom to shove responsibility.
I dont trust WHO either.
China is hoping we become too distracted so they can roll on Taiwan.
Theres the match to start the fire.
You are right, but the Party is much more likely to erect a statue of Chang Kai-Shek in Tienanmen Square than admit an error of that magnitude to the world.
Hope not. But I can see (hope for) uprisings as factories shut down and the peasant kids go back home to their 17th Century huts penniless. 10's of millions of them.
The Chi Coms can ESAD!
And our traitorous media agrees with the Chicoms
Won’t get fooled again!
In an article in Xinhua, the state-run media agency that’s largely considered the mouthpiece of the party, Beijing bragged about its handling of COVID-19, a virus that originated in the city of Wuhan and has spread quickly around the world, killing nearly 5,000 people and infecting thousands more. The article also claimed that China could impose pharmaceutical export controls which would plunge America into “the mighty sea of coronavirus.”

China threatened to murder Americans in our time of need.
Those bat eaters best be careful. Since they have already destroyed our economy we might as well just bite the bullet and kill two birds and decouple from there supply chain in some kind of organized manor. We should insist Congress vote on such a resolution providing it is binding in some way. We need to flush out our politicians whom are doing the Chicoms bidding (State levels as well)
The timeline is important inforomation.
The virus was first seen, while not given a name, by physicians reporting on November 17th.
The report was repressed by the Chinese government, and disciplinary actions were applied to the reporting doctors.
The physicians, among themselves noted the increase of infections, as did the native Wuhan population.
The Chinese New Year celebrations were held across the Chinese nation, whereby the infection multiplied by travelers and other family members.
Then, after the travelers and Wuhan populations had been exposed on New Year celebrations, the Chinese government notified the U.S. of the virus existence on Jan. 3rd.
Now the Chinese government acts indignant after notifying the WHO (World Health Organization) two months ( 2 )later;
the current director of WHO is the first non-physician director, his only other previous experience as a politician who had covered up three cholera infections in Ethiopia.
It was China who had promoted this politician as the director of WHO, and the same individual who delayed declaring a "pandemic".
The Chinese government ordered the destruction of medical records and information about the new virus;
furthermore, they refused entry and oversight of experienced international medical community and/or virologists.
Given the prior history of plagues and virus infections coming out of China, such action is consistent with their previous behavior - such criticism is warranted.
Somebody is lying, and it isn't the international community who have been made victims.
Right out of the communist playbook for China to accuse the US of what they themselves are doing.
She said that China first told the United States of the novel coronavirus outbreak on January 3...
By then they were confirming the obvious.
Everyone know the chicoms are murdering thieves and liars. But you can make money with them so, what the hell?
Stand up, Chuck!
