The deadly coronavirus has been met with a bit of a shrug among some in the under-50 set in the United States. Even as public health officials repeatedly urged social distancing, the young and hip spilled out of bars on Bourbon Street. They gleefully hopped on flights, tweeting about the rock bottom airfares. And they gathered in packs on beaches.
Their attitudes were based in part on early data from China, which suggested COVID-19 might seriously sicken or kill the elderly - but spare the young.
Stark new data from the United States and Europe suggests otherwise.

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analysis of U.S. cases from Feb. 12 to March 16 that was released Wednesday shows that 38% of those sick enough to be hospitalized were younger than 55 years.
Earlier this week, French health ministry official Jérôme Salomon said half the 300 to 400 coronavirus patients treated in ICUs in Paris were younger than 65 years and, according to numbers presented at a seminar of intensive care specialists, half the ICU patients in the Netherlands were under the age of 50.

Since I crossed 70, I like to say "I can't party like a 60-year old anymore."

I rolled my eyes at that.
If they are trying to cajole dumb 22 year olds into staying home, then dont flipping lie with stats by heaping people 35-50 as “younger adult”. They arent that dumb.
This is the 2nd time I’ve seen this.
The article says under 50, and younger means just that, younger than 50 and above.
Because under 54 is the majority of the population.
They are trying to scare 20 year olds with this headline because they say they are non-symptomatic carriers who won't self-isolate unless they think that they are in danger,

I think you are correct. These sorts of stories started to appear AFTER all the photos of idiot Spring Breakers crowding Florida beaches.
The other ages were from other countries, the headline says 'US' not Netherlands.

When I think of “younger adults” I think of the college kids packing the spring break beaches right now because they think they’re immune and immortal.
That’s not to say that on an occasional good night I can’t wake up with next day regrets.

Over my adult life I have known many people who would repeat a scary headline they read and when asked questions about it answered ‘That’s all I know”
There is a theory that a much tougher virus on the young has been added to the mix in the US.
That's what they want you to think ~ 18 to 25 yr olds
But if only they were included in the statistic the title wouldnt sound so scary
Vaping, pot smoking and sitting around playing video games. That’s why the toll on young adults might be worse here than other places.
There is another study coming out this week: “400 Spring Breakers between the ages of 20 and 54 passed out in Daytona Beach this week.”
I wouldn’t call the Spring Break kids “idiots.” They certainly aren’t falling for this China Virus hoax that has our country shut down.
