Though Cook County States Attorney Kim Foxx won Tuesdays four-way primary in her bid for reelection, her comparatively weak performance compared to 2016 suggests she wont necessarily cruise to victory in November.
Foxx had won 48% of the Democratic vote and was leading her nearest opponent, Bill Conway, by about 15 percentage points.
With 95% of suburban precincts reporting, Foxx had won just 43% of the Democratic vote, seven points ahead of Conway, who conceded to Foxx Tuesday night.
I see more than a hint of political vulnerability in these results. Though Foxx has dismissed the controversy over her handling of the Jussie Smollett case with a barnyard epithet, a substantial number of voters apparently remain concerned and still want answers.
Former Cook County Circuit Court Judge Pat OBrien, who trounced Pfannkuche in Tuesdays Republican primary, will certainly hammer on the unanswered questions during the general election campaign. This will be particularly true if special prosecutor Dan Webb releases unflattering conclusions later this year about why Foxx abruptly halted the prosecution of TV actor Smollett on charges that he staged a hate crime against himself in January 2019.
Yes, the GOP is so weak in Cook County that winning the Democratic primary is usually tantamount to winning the general election. But in a 1990 special election, Republican challenger Jack OMalley beat incumbent Cook County States Attorney Cecil Partee with 59% of the vote.
In a general election two years later, OMalley won 62% of the vote against Democratic challenger Pat OConnor, a Chicago alderman. So it can be done.

I hope O’Brien will beat Foxx!!
I liver here. he will win. The black vote always wins in Chicago. I have never seen such stupidity here. Daley’s could not win anymore. Illinois is going bankrupt in 13 months. This crash will kill their bonds. So, there is no where for Illinois to go from here. If Trump gives the state money they will just give it to the government unions.
Im so glad Im no longer working in the city of Chicago.
Looks like I got out just in time.

Tells you a lot about the Chicago voter that a known corrupt would win election again.
