Lower death rate estimates for coronavirus, especially for non-elderly, provide glimmer of hope
Stat ^ | MARCH 16, 2020 | SHARON BEGLEY

In a rare piece of good news about Covid-19, a team of infectious disease experts calculates that the fatality rate in people who have symptoms of the disease caused by the new coronavirus is about 1.4%. Although that estimate applies specifically to Wuhan, the Chinese city where the outbreak began, and is based on data from there, it offers a guide to the rest of the world, where many countries might see even lower death rates.

CFR appear to be lower in Wuhan than originally thought.

The fatality rate “in people who have symptoms.” Add in those who don’t have symptoms and the rate will fall dramatically. But don’t let that get in the way of a good, healthy panic.

The regular Fake News won’t touch this with a ten foot pole...neither will the chronically hysterical who frequent these threads! Strange that some FReepers are sympatico with the Fake News on Coronavirus.

Come hell or high water, they’re going to have their pandemic!

I and two other shoppers kept bumping into each other at the local arts/crafts stores tonight.

Finally spoke at the last store and I told the cashier that they and I were out Shopping The Apocalypse.

The whole damn mall nearby was dark and empty.

The communist party can be trusted to tell the truth about their handling of this virus? No.

Wow.

1.4% mortality is considered goo news?

14X as deadly and 3X as contagious as the flu.

Chinese lies. Eventually enough of the truth about Wuhan will get out.

Look to South Korea and Italy for real numbers, best/worst case scenarios, respectively.

If your HCS doesn’t collapse because you took the threat seriously, CFR will be around 1%.

If you ‘but flu’ed your way into catastrophe and your HCS collapses, CFR is around 7%.

As more cases resolve, either, likely both, will creep upward somewhat, but I’ll take SK’s numbers over Italy’s any day. Still 10x as deadly as the flu, though, even if you have it under control.

Containment is key.

Let’s see—the socialists have spent years trying to scare us about carbon dioxide, and we remain stubbornly unconvinced.

On the other hand, here is a disease that no one is immune to and which is shaping up to be more deadly than the H1N1 pandemic of 1917 to 1919, and people are taking the threat seriously.

Maybe the difference in response is due to the fact that there is no real scientific basis for claiming that humanity is changing the climate of the earth, vs. the very solid scientific basis for perceiving this pandemic as a serious threat.

In other words, the responses are rational, and not people falling for totalitarian schemes.

Aside from the fact that these are Panda Propaganda numbers, we have pretty good data from elsewhere that include asymptomatic infected. CFR will be around 1% in SK when all is said and done.

In a month or so we’ll have tested pretty much everybody in the US (I would hope) and we’ll know.

I generally concur, but this would only be more deadly than the Spanish Flu if we still had 1918 medicine. The reason it blossomed so quickly is that we have a lot more and faster travel around the world.

If we didn’t have planes it might not have made it out of Asia this time around.

Left unchecked, it is worse than H1N1 in contagiousness and lethality, you are absolutely correct there. Fortunately we have an extra century of medical advances.

This whole thing was to take down President Trump..Shutting down businesses and Restaurants. to kill the economy!!! Creating fear, so bad that people started hoarding food and goods..I believe that some of the deaths were from the Flu and the doctors and the CDC is blaming Coronvirus for all the deaths..That way they can justify their actions!! Yes there probably is Coronvirus and it is killing some people.. Mostly elderly. Guess what? The flu kills the elderly too!

Look to South Korea and Italy for real numbers, best/worst case scenarios, respectively.

South Korea will end up around 1.5% to 2%. Their surge in new cases began just over 2 weeks ago, and 2-3 weeks is when cases begin to resolve one way or another. They are currently at 1% (0.97%) and if just 1% of their 6,800+ active cases succumb, they will have a CFR of 1.8%. We can beat that if we identify the most effective drugs and treatments, and apply them early, along with effective public health policies and testing programs. We need to use the lessons of other countries' successes and failures.

Note that some areas and states will do better than others. Just because New York and Seattle get hammered doesn't mean Dallas and San Diego do. Many parts of Italy still have pretty low infection rates. This will depend somewhat on the effectiveness of local public health systems and care providers.

The CDC estimates the death toll for the Spanish Flu at 50 million worldwide with about 675,000 deaths occurring in the US.

Why do you think WuFlu will be more deadly?
