CDC: Public Health Laboratory Testing for COVID-19
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) ^ | March 15, 2020 | CDC

Posted on 03/16/2020 6:05:30 AM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

CDC is responding to an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus. The outbreak first started in Wuhan, China, but cases have been identified in a growing number of other locations internationally, including the United States.

Number of specimens tested for SARS CoV-2 by CDC labs (N=4,069) and U.S. public health laboratories* (N=18,644)†

Note: As of March 12, the dates associated with the specimens tested by CDC Labs have been updated to reflect the date the specimen was received by CDC, instead of when they were collected from the patient. Use of the specimen received date better reflects when specimens became available for testing by the CDC Labs.

More recent data has been assembled by this ad-hoc team of data analysts/tech people. Total reported tests is more than 38,000. The CDC is behind the curve, but the CDC doesn’t treat people, there are more than 6,000 hospitals in the US and more than 1 million doctors.

OK, 38,000 tests have been conducted. Still, isn’t that an incredibly small number of tests?

I’ve watched the WH press briefings for the last three days. There will be 1.9 million tests available this week, and the lab capacity to process them.

The US is already tracking lower infection and death rates per capita than SK. Amazing preparation happening, WATCH THE PRESS BRIEFINGS!!

There’s one this morning. Watch on the White House youtube channel.

Hard to test Americans, when the original CDC tests didn’t work and there were just a few to go around thanks to Obama’s/Biden’s left over CDC.

Tests were available and CDC played its game here and those tests went to China, Korea, the UK and ?????!

Yes, there has been a fast test for this virus,, but our old rules concerning any test approval by the Obama/Biden CDC/FDA thugs, kept this test out of America.

Thanks to President Trump that is changing.

Shares of Swiss drug maker Roche rise after FDA approval for corona virus test!

The company says the tests are able to provide results in 3-½ hours.

This approval for Roche means millions of tests a month will be available to help boost capacity for diagnosis of the flu-like virus.

Shares of Swiss diagnostics and pharmaceutical giant Roche rose 3% Friday after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued emergency authorization for their COVID-19 test.

These highly automated tests, which the company says are able to provide results in 3-½ hours, can be run on Roche’s fully-automated machines which are already installed in hospitals and laboratories across the U.S. and around the world.

Roche was the first company to supply tests to diagnose the corona virus in China.

The drug giant was able to lean on its experience dealing with the SARS virus outbreak which also originated in China. Speaking to CNBC in January, CEO Severin Schwan said the company’s focus was to bring the necessary diagnostic platforms and test to the point of care.

Testing for the virus is one of the primary concerns in the United States at this stage. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a total of just over 11,000 specimens have been tested since January.

By contrast, a total of almost 30,000 people have been tested for the virus in the United Kingdom, while nearly 20,000 people are being tested for the virus everyday in South Korea.

This USA approval for Roche means millions of tests a month will now be available to help boost capacity for diagnosis of the flu-like virus.

Beyond diagnostics, Roche has also been involved in the fight against corona virus complications.

Earlier this month, China approved use of the Swiss drugmaker’s anti-inflammatory drug Actemra to treat patients with aggressive immune reactions to the virus.

Wonder if the Roche Diagnostic test was used on our president for his quick test results?

As I posted above, the US has actually conducted more than 38,000 tests. Your information about the number of tests conducted is simply a little out of date - and the number of tests conducted could rise dramatically in the coming days/hours. Comparing the US to S. Korea, in terms of the number of tests performed, must take into account that the disease reached the US about 2 weeks after it reached S. Korea. If no one is getting sick (as was the case until 2 weeks ago in the US) THERE IS NO ONE TO TEST.

It depends how many people have symptoms I suppose. There is going to be a tsunami of tests, one test for every roll of hoarded toilet paper.

This data is not behind, maybe you are re the significance of this test becoming available at basically any hospital or clinic with a good lab.

INDIANAPOLIS — Roche Diagnostics has received emergency approval for a new coronavirus test it developed.

The company received emergency approval late Thursday night from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to send half a million tests to labs across the country from its North America headquarters in Indianapolis.

“For us, it’s been all about how do we make sure the patients who need to test, get the test at the time they need it,” Randy Pritchard, senior vice president of marketing for Roche, said.

In six weeks, the company was able to develop the test when it normally takes about 18-months to identify a virus and submit something to the FDA, Pritchard said.

With the new test, you can have results as fast as three days as opposed to days with some current tests.

Don’t drink the kool aid about there not being test kits. It’s BS. My wife is a nurse in a town of 8000 deep in flyover country. She said they have done a few, pretty much all of them are the local known hypochondriacs. They have no idea how many tests have been done would be my opinion, like everything else gov related they don’t have a clue.

Yup. The availability of testing is increasing at a high rate.

And it's because of this that the number of new cases per day is not an accurate measure of the spread of the disease.

The more accurate number is the number of deaths per day, although that's probably about a week behind what is really going on.

The first test positive for COVID-19 in the U.S. I believe was in mid-January. And it was actually a day before the first test positive in S.K..
