New Data Systems to ‘Supercharge’ Patient Power

When hours count, such as during the COVID-19 situation, rapid care coordination is crucial. While perhaps too late for this crisis, a new line of defense will soon become operational that will aid in obtaining medical histories quickly, speeding up care and reducing redundancies. Think of it as an advanced level of care coordination.

When he was elected, President Trump pledged to put patients first and has followed-up on this commitment in a historic way. His MyHealthEData initiative, announced in 2018, was created to empower patients by giving them easy access to their personal health data.

Turning initiative into action, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on March 9 announced the finalization of two rules, issued by the HHS Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, that would give safe, secure access to health data for all Americans. Armed with their personal health data, Americans will have an important tool to assist them in making more informed health care decisions.

The rules provide extraordinary access to this kind of data for individuals and are the most significant data sharing policies ever realized by the federal government. Previous administrations have attempted this level of interoperability and laws were enacted to achieve it, but it’s the Trump administration that’s actually delivered it. Now, both private and public organizations must share health information between patients and other parties in a manner that ensures safety, privacy and security.

Americans will be able to manage their health care in the same way they handle their travel and utilize other information. They’ll be able to use their smartphones to shop for care driven by apps that will provide price and product transparency.

Gone are the days where patients are kept in the dark as the Trump administration breaks down data silos that negatively affect care and increase costs due to redundancies like repeated tests. Patients may now expect improved health outcomes and lower costs.

According to HHS Secretary Alex Azar, patients will have “countless new opportunities for them to improve their own health care, find providers that meet their needs, and drive quality through greater coordination.” Care coordination is key, particularly for Medicare Advantage (MA) beneficiaries. Every year during the annual enrollment period, Medicare beneficiaries have the option of choosing a new MA plan. As a result of these rules, MA members will be able to take their health data from plan to plan and provider to provider, creating a cumulative health record that will enable physicians to provide more efficient care. MA members and others will also be able to access critical claims data giving them more complete information to better manage their treatment.

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Seema Verma said, “Thanks to the leadership of President Trump, these rules begin a new chapter by requiring insurance plans to share health data with their patients in a format suitable for their phones or other device of their choice. We are holding payers to a higher standard while protecting patient privacy through secure access to their health information.”

Coinciding with the new flu season, some features of these rules become applicable this fall and the process dictates that further application will be occurring in 2021 through 2023. Whether it’s a new strain of coronavirus or something completely different, patients and the health care system will have these advancements available to them to help combat tomorrow’s health challenges.

Interoperability. The ability of Electronic Health Records to be exchanged seamlessly among health care providers. The ultimate enabler of big data and AI in health care delivery or the ultimate tool to ration healthcare.

Soon be online? What a bunch of horseshit! Electronic medical records was one of the 'key' components of Bathhouse Barry Care and it's requirements drove tens of thousand of small and older practitioners who couldn't afford to upgrade out of business........just....like.....it.....was ....supposed to!

If the 'experts in government couldn't get it online in all the years since bullshit care was passed why would anyone believe that it 'will soon become operational'?

In WA state, a healthcare testing business received government funding to test sample people with the ordinary flu. They collected about 11,000 samples.
...........
With the new virus, on their own, they went back and tested those samples for COVID-19. They found nealy a hundred actually had COVID-19.
...........
They told the CDC.
.............
They were informed that those test results were private and that they could not legally tell the patients or even health authorities that they had the virus.
..............
The governor, did nothing, the feds, did nothing. Now it’s too late. They have either recovered, died or passed it on.
............
Evidently, now that there is a “national emergency” they could disclose.
.............
The UW started a driveby testing program first. Until they were informed that they could only test healthcare workers.
..............
In the future, laws need to change.

If the government would just force medical providers to provide prices and efficacy information, it would change everything.

Heck, just the prices would change everything.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

The false positive rate was 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's or one old fart’s life, it's worth it.

This is the nugget in this article. The U.S. healthcare system has been plagued by price secrecy and lack of transparency.

So, gandalftb, do you have a link to the source of this “information” that you are spreading?

Yeah, no, hell no. Some of this sounds good in Emergencies but the privacy of any patient will be rendered null and void.

I get my and my wife’s records and results on line every few days.

And if we need to go to a specialist we can print it out or send it to them electronically.

What healthcare systems do you all use?

My medical issues are not really a secret. Sit down for five minutes, I’d be happy to tell you.

Withholding insurance? They aren’t going to give you insurance without a blood test. So, what’s to withhold?

It’s here. “They” already know everything they need to know. And “they” don’t care about us.

You guys need to keep up.

Yeah you can price shop medical procedures as easy as comparison shopping on Amazon. NOT!

Oh, you want the “price.”

My guess is you couldn’t begin to discuss the variability in a normal vaginal delivery among ten different women.

But, you want the “price.”

If you know the procedure codes you can find it. You can also call your insurance company—they certainly know all of the prices and the quality scores of each hospital.

It’s funny everyone is interested in the price. You probably don’t realize your “cheap” option probably comes with high infection rates and high readmits.

But you probably don’t look that shit up either.

Do you even look up your doc? Probably not.

From the same government that turns a blind eye on both sides of the aisle regarding illegals using our cotizens SSNs and looking the other way.

If they had any credibility on the subject i’d listen. But for decades they have not.

I get my and my wife’s records and results on line every few days.

That's nice, what does it have to do with my post?

And if we need to go to a specialist we can print it out or send it to them electronically.

Closer. That whole EMR(electronic medical record)thing that was forced on to providers with Barry Care is supposed to have negated you having to print out and take anything....years ago! And now this article is crowing about how it will soon be happening.

What healthcare systems do you all use?

Not germane to the topic.

My medical issues are not really a secret. Sit down for five minutes, I’d be happy to tell you.

You might want to familiarize yourself with the HIPPA Act. You may not care what you share, but it expressley states what your providers may not and is an important aspect of EMR's and how they are safeguarded.

Withholding insurance? They aren’t going to give you insurance without a blood test. So, what’s to withhold?

I wish I knew what you were talking about, where did I say anything about anyone withholding insurance, it's not even mentioned anywhere in the article. And what insurance requires a blood test.......life insurance? The article was about the future of EMR's.

It’s here. “They” already know everything they need to know. And “they” don’t care about us.

Okay, I have to ask, are you related to someone named Biden? Or a regular listener of Coast To Coast? IT is not here as prommissed or forced on providers, I don't know who the hell your THEY but as far as separate providers, e.g. the emergency room, podiatrist, or any other provider outside of your normal healthcare provider office having your medical record online without your bringing it or having to give permission for your regular healthcare provider to release it.......NO that does not exist at this point of time. And if whoever your "They" are I would drop them like they were hot if they don't care about you.

There is an aspect of this that cause me to wonder. Americans who typically mistrust government are suddenly demanding they be given access to contributing to a government managed, massive DNA database.
