105, 204, 414.

How many miles are considered “Adequately protected” by natural barriers or the desert itself?

How many miles “Now adequately protected” by the existing walls and barriers? Many were terrible of course, but not all were left decrepit and open.

“How many miles are considered “Adequately protected” by natural barriers or the desert itself?”

Every single mile needs technology that can reliably detect intruders, in time for the available response to arrest them.

After a thorough analysis though, 1,100 total miles of effective barrier were determined to be needed (out of the 1,954 miles of the Southern Border). 221 miles of the existing barrier has been assessed as effective.

I have two big uncertainties, on how to calculate from the unclassified summaries that I have seen published. I am not sure, if they count a linear mile of double layer barrier as one mile of barrier or two, and I am not sure if they count those 221 effective pre-existing miles as part of the 1,100 mile requirement (I think they do).

The ballpark is that about half of the border needs barrier system, but every inch needs to be effectively monitored and patrolled. They have technology programs rolling out now to dramatically improve detection and tracking in areas without barrier. Where ever the new “Wall System” barrier is going in, technology is going in there as well.
