Cant one own a “machine gun” with the proper permits in the USA? I thought this was true at one time?

Legal ownership of a machinegun is a pedantic issue at this point.

Yes, you may own one IF:
- it was made pre-1986 (VERY limited supply)
- pay the market premium for limited supply (>25x markup; it’s an investment, not a weapon at this point)
- submit to 1+ year paperwork, background check, and $200 tax

To wit: you’re buying someone else’s right to own an antique.
Technically legal? yes.
Practically legal? no.

You can own a select fire weapon with the correct paper work. ie: a Class III license and money $$$$. Just can't be made after 1986 per Ronald Reagan.
