Rome: Italy on Sunday had the second-highest coronavirus toll in the world, after reporting a sharp jump in both deaths and number of infected people, according to an AFP count.
The number of fatalities shot up by 133 to 366 Sunday, while the number of infections rose by a single-day record of 1,492 to hit 7,375, its civil protection agency said.

I wonder how many of the 366 fatalities would trace their ancestry to the Roman Empire, and how many to the Han Dynasty?
Is the speculation that there is a genetic component to the vulnerability true?
I do not know, sorry.
NO ONE in a media that is normally hypersensitive to any mention of race in any human endeavor has reported on that.
They will report nationality, but not race.
It's as if they and everyone in politics has suddenly gone *ahem* skin tone deaf...
In this study, we analyzed five large-scale bulk transcriptomic datasets of normal lung tissue and two single-cell transcriptomic datasets to investigate the disparities related to race, age, gender and smoking status in ACE2 gene expression and its distribution among cell types. We didnt find significant disparities in ACE2 gene expression between racial groups (Asian vs Caucasian), age groups (>60 vs <60) or gender groups (male vs female). However, we observed significantly higher ACE2 gene expression in former smokers lung compared to non-smokers lung. Also, we found higher ACE2 gene expression in Asian current smokers compared to non-smokers but not in Caucasian current smokers, which may indicate an existence of gene-smoking interaction. In addition, we found that ACE2 gene is expressed in specific cell types related to smoking history and location.I understand Chinese men are heavy smokers which may have contributed in part (combined with CCP's lackluster initial response) to the higher CFR in Wuhan.
Thanks.
Only because the Iranian numbers are garbage and NK numbers don’t exist.
What the hell are they doing kissing each other?
Prayers for Italia.....been there....loved it.
True.
Yes, I had heard that before that smokers were especially vulnerable, and men more than women. Of course, there could be more men than women who smoke. A large percentage of Chinese adult males smoke, and that is probably true of Europe as well.
Unless they are trying to support a "victim race" theory.
That’s a really high fatality rate in Italy.
Which strain is it, and how did the Pakistani delivery guy catch it?
In the US the FDA stripped the Chiron Corporation of it's license to distribute any vaccines in the US and was bought out two years later(out of business)
South Korea didn't get this vaccine. In the US only Maryland it was distributed I believe by clinical testing.
This report shows locations where the SARS Vaccine was distributed and says hundreds of millions SARS vaccine was distributed

This report explains how the SARS vaccine was a failure in 2004 (basically changed the lungs of the person making them more at risk of all SARS related viruses)

I wonder about compromised lungs from the heavy number of smokers in those areas.
I have read that a history of smoking or being from an area with heavy air pollution are aggravating factors for those infected with the virus.
Whew!
Mrs Genentech and I were there back in 2000. We had a great time. Italy is in my thoughts and prayers.
