I think they were sexually frustrated to be honest. They sure seemed to hate boys.

There was that too. I wonder how many went into the convent as a result of bad experiences with men.

Who knows. I my day(the early ‘60’s) I think in large Catholic families it was common for one child to either go into the priesthood or the nunnery. Man those women were absolute harridans. Rarely did I ever meet one who was kind. One stands out I must say.

I grew up in a town in north Jersey. Went to a Catholic school run by The Sisters Of Charity(an odd name, considering) when I was in the second grade we had a young nun, Sister John. She was nice. She would play the guitar for us in class. I think she may have been inspired by Jeannie Decker, aka "Sister Soliel'', of "Dominique'' fame, remember that song? Anyway she didn't last. The older nuns shipped her off to ''the missions'' in Africa.
