As Bernie Sanders Pushed for Closer Ties, Soviet Union Spotted Opportunity. Previously unseen documents from a Soviet archive show how hard Mr. Sanders worked to find a sister city in Russia when he was a mayor in the 1980s.

YAROSLAVL, Russia — The mayor of Burlington, Vt., wrote to a Soviet counterpart in a provincial city that he wanted the United States and the Soviet Union to “live together as friends.”

Unbeknown to him, his desire for friendship meshed with the efforts of Soviet officials in Moscow to “reveal American imperialism as the main source of the danger of war.”

That mayor was Bernie Sanders, and the story of his 1988 trip to the Soviet Union has been told before. But many of the details of Mr. Sanders’s Cold War diplomacy before and after that visit — and the Soviet effort to exploit Mr. Sanders’s antiwar agenda for their own propaganda purposes — have largely remained out of sight.

The New York Times examined 89 pages of letters, telegrams and internal Soviet government documents revealing in far greater detail the extent of Mr. Sanders’s personal effort to establish ties between his city and a country many Americans then still considered an enemy despite the reforms being initiated at the time under Mikhail S. Gorbachev, the Soviet general secretary.

They also show how the Kremlin viewed these sister city relationships as vehicles to sway American public opinion about the Soviet Union.

“One of the most useful channels, in practice, for actively carrying out information-propaganda efforts has proved to be sister-city contact,” a Soviet Foreign Ministry document provided to Yaroslavl officials said.

The documents are part of a government archive in Yaroslavl, Russia, which became the sister city of Burlington. The files are open to the public, though archivists there said that, until now, no one had asked to see them.

Nothing in the documents suggests that Mr. Sanders was the only local American official targeted for propaganda, or even that he was particularly receptive to it

Seems it’s somebody’s job in the Democrat Party to aggregate dossiers on their own people, ready to smack down anyone who becomes problematic. Time and again I’ve seen such “previously unseen documents” emerge within 3 days of a candidate getting out of line. Opposition research I understand; this is clearly cataloging dirt on their supporters & leaders.

Yaroslavl had an uprising against the Bolsheviks in July 1918 during the Russian Civil War. Unfortunately the anti Bolshevik government in Ufa in the Urals did not provide support and the revolt was crushed by the Red Army. Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team died in a plane crash there in 2011.

Indeed! This is the pot calling the kettle black.

The NYT has served as an institution of useful idiots to the communist cause for over a century.

I’ve no doubt at all that there were Soviet archives that detail how Walter Duranty and other NYT reporters were manipulated by the KGB and its forebears since 1917.

To their credit, however, the NYT had a pretty good correspondent in Moscow back in the 1970s (Hedrick Smith).

DNC mouthpiece NY Times now going after crazy Bernie to clear the forest for slow Joe.That rag is so transparent. Ever noticed that they have never written one negative story on Mexico since Mexico’s richest man, Carlos Slim , took 17% ownership of the rag

NYT is dutifully doing its job here, i.e., hitting Bernie in order to lock this down for Biden (or Hillary if she replaces him later due to his cognitive impairment).

Sure, Bernie is a commie. Sure, Bernie had warm and fuzzy feelings about the old Soviet Union. Everyone already knows this. So why now? The NYT has received its marching orders.

Never understand why people suck up to those who kicked their family’s asses (and worse in the case of Bernie’s father’s side of the family in Poland). Strikes me as a huge psychological defect.

And in 2012, CPUSA member John Case wrote in the official communist organ "Political Affairs:"
To use Carl Davidson's excellent slogan around which left and working class forces can mobilize-- "peace and prosperity vs war and austerity" -- this is clearly a time when we can qualitatively expand the base of support for the principles the slogan expresses. The question is: can we do this and not end up playing a Nader-like spoiler role, that concludes by electing the Right, in those campaigns, primaries, etc where our main objective is to move the political center leftward and strengthen the hand of center forces against the right. Of course, in those campaigns where the left coalition has winning chances, where the center is ready to be led by left forces, tactics differ.

The complexity of the US political process at this moment requires shrewd and careful AND BOLD calculations There are few, if any, politicians on the left more shrewd than Bernie Sanders. I am not convinced about Bernie's denials. I got to know him somewhat in my years as a UE rep in Vt, and later as DO for the Communist Party in N. New England. With a few arguable exceptions, he has always -- both ideologicaly and politically -- pursued a working class line. As important, he become a demonstrated master of very concrete tactics directed at isolating the right, without appearing irresponsible or reckless to center forces. He kept focused on the concretes -- especially economics, and non-corrupt governance -- that blunted repeated attempts by the right to isolate him.
He would have to run as a Democrat in the 2012 primaries, in order not to be counted as a spoiler. Unlike Nader, Bernie has never been a 'spoiler' politician. But running as a Democrat, after years of success as an Independent is something I think he would be temperamentally loath to do. Part of his success at independence is due to some very peculiar features unique to Vermont political history, that would not be practical to reproduce nationally. Nonetheless, I am sure he will be tempted.

Personally, at this point, I think a primary challenge against Obama is a mistake -- the history of such challenges is not encouraging for defeating Republicans. Obama is not a Blue Dog-er, IMHO, but rather a liberal doing what Presidents do -- not straying too far from the Center. I think we should focus our primary challenge energies against the blue dogs and in local and state campaigns where we can strengthen and galvanize our grass roots base. But I am willing to be persuaded otherwise -- only if we ourselves--the Left are grown-up enough to be as shrewd and smart and flexible as Kucinich on health care, or Sanders through most of his career.

They have to be careful or he’ll go Ralph Nader on them, and his brother is already a Green Party official in the UK.

Tough balance: giving Bernie and his supporters enough involvement to keep them from going rogue in November vs. keeping them out of the general public’s view.

Of course, this does not address the possibility that someone somewhere has a lot of dirt on Bernie and yesterday’s NYTimes hit piece was just a shot across the bow— play nice BernMan or we’ll start talking about who’s up in Canada.

If Bernie suddenly remembers his table manners, just know that whatever they have on him is worse than frolicking with commies at the height of the cold war (NY Times) and exposing the rape fantasy porn he used to write (Jake Tapper — both left wing media outfits)...
