Italy says it's had 41 new COVID-19 deaths in just 24 hours.

The country's civil protection agency said on Thursday evening that 3,858 people had been infected and 148 had died.

It came as the UK and Switzerland announced their first deaths from the disease.

Earlier on Thursday, the World Health Organization (WHO) urged people not to give up fighting the outbreak.

It has now killed 3,281 people globally and infected more than 95,000.

"This is not a drill, this is not a time to give up, this is not a time for excuses, this is a time for pulling out all the stops," WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

China reported 143 new cases in the past 24 hours, but most new cases are outside China. The number of newly reported cases in South Korea appears to be declining, WHO said.

France's health ministry announced three new deaths from COVID-19 and said there were 138 fresh infections.

The death toll in France is now at seven.

One 73-year-old in l'Oise, where there are more than 100 cases of the virus, died and another person, who is 64 years old died, in the department of l'Aisne.

A day after announcing it would shut all schools and universities for two weeks, Italy reported a sharp hike in COVID-19 deaths.

The death toll jumped from 107 people on Wednesday to 148 on Thursday.

The northern regions of Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy — which surround Milan — remain the worst-hit with nearly three-quarters of all the country's infections.

Lombardy has had 98 deaths and 2,251 cases; Emilia-Romagna 30 fatalities and 698 infections.

Angelo Borrelli, who heads up Italy's civil protection agency, said the outbreak had not hit the number of hospital beds available.

"For the moment, there are no major difficulties regarding the number

Bit of black humor here. Looks like a lot of countries are about to have their national pension scheme- and old age medical care-related fiscal problems solved.

In Italy it appears as if they are not able to treat all those who end up with severe cases so the death rate seems to be rising.

At 68, he’s no spring chicken. But one less hostage-taker alive is never a bad thing.

I thought in Italy it was the Peronivirus?

That observation has been made a few dozen times at least on the much lambasted CV threads over the past month or so beginning pretty well as soon as evidence came in that over-70’s were being hit very hard and under-20’s not at all.

I think that in the end many governments will put on a good show, but make as much effort to end the CV as they make to end abortion.

It doesn’t matter whether the initial people did it by design or by accident—many first world governments, as well as places with gender imbalances or demographic problems, have leaders who will be thanking their higher powers for a seeming solution to a seemingly insoluble problem.

And sometimes there is a need to hit the reset button.

Me, so long as the Angel of Death uses it to take out most of the Cardinals before it takes out the Pope and leaves a good group of Cardinals standing, I don’t really care too much, though it would be nice if something brought Islam to heel and the west back to its senses.

The combination of Italians normally greeting each other with a LOT of physical contact plus a large elderly population explains the large mortality rate there.

You have a point there. The hugs and the kissing on both cheeks - that’s got to be a big factor.

Then they won’t need to import millions of “migrants” to prop up their social welfare state.

Maybe there's an evolutionary aspect to this. The standard Chinese hand greeting(s) may look like the diagram below because the segments of the population that did anything more intimate (like shaking hands or hugging) may have died out (due to infectious disease):

The Sardines movement (Italian: movimento delle sardine), also known as Sardines against Salvini (sardine contro Salvini),[5] is a grassroots political movement, which began in Italy in November 2019.[1][2][6]

The movement organized an ongoing series of peaceful demonstrations to protest against the right-wing surge in the country and, more specifically, against the political rhetoric of right-wing leader Matteo Salvini.[7]

The name "Sardines" came from the idea of organizing their rallies with high numbers of participants, packed together like sardines in a shoal.[1][8]

They picked the absolutely worst time to pack together in the public squares. But it's 'politically incorrect' to even bring up this movement as a contributor to the spread of the virus...

The lesson here is that covid can get away from you, even in a first world country.

My guess is that Chinese are less vulnerable, for the same reason that conquistadors were less vulnerable to smallpox. At the same time, I don’t think this will be anywhere near as bad as the flu.

This virus may well save our Social Security system. Also, remember the Obozo Care death panels? They’re not needed now.

That might alienate Italian-American voters, and give rise to accusations of hysteria. Italy is also pretty dependent on tourism. For Uncle Sam to do this against a close NATO ally would trigger an avalanche of similar restrictions against Italy by other countries.

Against China, it makes sense, both politically and diplomatically. Against Italy, not so much. Don’t think of Italy as a foreign country. Think of it as the closest thing we have to a state, while being a foreign country. Would we ban travel from a state?

According to the left we should be trying to emulate the Italian and European health care model it’s so wonderful.

I do fear we are going to get blindsided from the Atlantic side of the pond on this one with travelers from Europe rather than Asia. European travel ban should be in place.
