House Passes $8.3 Billion Bill to Battle Coronavirus
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 3/4/20 | Andrew Duehren

The House passed a roughly $8.3 billion emergency spending package for combating the coronavirus outbreak, sending the legislation to the Senate as lawmakers raced to respond to the quickly spreading outbreak.

The legislation, crafted by top Republicans and Democrats, caps less than two weeks of negotiations that began when the White House said it planned to spend roughly $2.5 billion on fighting the virus, an amount lawmakers said was too low. It passed the House overwhelmingly, with just two Republicans voting against it (Andy Biggs of Arizona and Ken Buck of Colorado) and 415 members supporting it. President Trump has said he would sign whatever package Congress approves.

Hate to sound snarky, but expect about $6 billion of that to be wasted, misdirected, or just plain stolen.

Just like the oil for food program.

About 5% of it went for food.

Well, securing the border is a big part of slowing down the spread of the virus, so I’d say it is quite a legitimate expense.

I had the same thought. They identified $2.5 Billion in need which is likely bloated to start. But they shoveled $6B at it to show how serious they are about it. So serious that we should also consider a boarder wall so sick people aren’t sneaking into our country easily.

The devil is in the details. This is not going to be $8.5 billion for Coronavirus. Maybe one one-hundredth of it will be, but not the rest. C’mon we all know how omnibus bills work and we’re not even in Congress.

It would have cost nothing (as in zero federal dollars) to stop all incoming international aircraft until this whole mess got sorted out. But we don’t have bold leadership anymore. I guess it’s easier to just throw huge amounts of money at the problem.

Side note: I read an article the other day about an American student who just arrived in the U.S. from Italy. She was amazed that there was no screening at the airport. No one even bothered to ask her any virus-related questions.

That is exactly what they will do. Steal it. Look Trump is asking for 2.5 billion, lets add 6 billion for our friends.

Every penny of that money is going straight into the D.C. sewer. If the CDC can’t deal with something like the Coronavirus in the first place, why do we even fund them at all? Isn’t this type of thing supposed to be Their Job (tm)?

Oh, wait, they’re too busy trying to define gun ownership and conservative ideas as “medical issues”. Never mind.

At least 2 billion of this will be siphoned off in graft and another 2 billion will be paid as juicy government contracts to political family members and cronies. We know how this works now.
