The proper immediate response is for McConnell to move that the Senate censure him for this inappropriate conduct. If he doesn't show proper contrition then the Senate can remove him from office. The Senate has the power and duty to expel any member who exhibits conduct unbecoming a US Senator.
Schumer's remarks crossed the line, especially when he hit back against Chief Justice Roberts. This cannot get a pass.

Republicans need to be relentless. Every question the media asks, about Schumer or not, the answer should be about Schumer. If a pressing issue comes up, e.g., the virus, talk about Schumer as part of that answer. Trump needs to pound this to death on Twitter. The RNC needs to run ads everywhere. Schumer needs to go down. It’s payback time for the hoax.

As a member of the NY Bar, I intend to file a disciplinary grievance against Schumer, with the 2nd Judicial Department, this weekend. The 2nd Judicial Department is politically mixed. He will probably get a private censure.
