One I recall - normally when surfacing, there is a series of commands given, and response by the crew in a professional, calm and orderly manner. “Aye aye Sir, clear #2 aft tanks” etc blah blah.

Something happened, can’t remember what he said it was, it was bad because they kept sinking.. and sinking. Once the sub reaches crush depth it’s all over. The skipper apparently got a little concerned, he came over the horn and said “Surface this SOB Right Now!!” something like that.

While on deployment with NATO in the North Atlantic we were practicing trying to infiltrate one of our convoys to test the ability of subs doing escort duty.
