The Social Democratic Party of Russia in the leadup to the Revolution divided into factions, the majority who were labeled minority or Mensheviks and the minority who claimed to be Bolsheviki - majority Bolsheviks. The Bolshies claimed to be the majority and purged the Menshies utimately killing most of the ones who did not escape the country. The Mensheviksi were more passive and used to orderly debate etc. The Bolsheviki were killers and fanatics. The killers and fanatics won the “debate.”

The Mensheviks (Russian: меньшевики́) were one dominant faction in the Russian socialist movement, the other being the Bolsheviks. The factions emerged in 1903 following a dispute in the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP) between Julius Martov and Vladimir Lenin.
