Southwest Valley Constructors receives $175.4M for border wall in Texas

Southwest Valley Constructors was awarded a $175.4 million contract for border wall construction in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, the Pentagon announced Friday.

Work on this contract will be performed in (the vicinity of) Rio Grande City, with an estimated completion date of Oct. 4, 2021, according to the Department of Defense.

The project is funded with Fiscal 2018 and 2019 appropriation funds, with the full amount of the award being obligated immediately.

New contracts should be coming in a wave soon. A lot of money is now piled up on hand, awaiting contracting.

At CPAC, Jared Kushner said that he expects construction to be averaging 7 miles per week (a mile per day average) in about two months.

I anticipate that the rate will keep accelerating throughout the rest of this year, as this huge bulge of funding ($12 billion) snakes its way through contracting and into construction.

Jared Kushner also said at CPAC, that he expects 400 miles to be completed by the end of the year. That seems to be a realistic, achievable goal. Maybe he is being Conservative, so he can over-deliver, but that is lower than the 450 number which others have used previously.

We certainly seem to be on track to have about that range completed by the end of the year (the highest priority miles), but we will also have pretty much all the barrier we really need (885 miles of new construction, plus 221 miles of re-usable pre-existing barrier) totally funded and on contract by then, even if only 400 miles are completed by that time.

We should compare butterfly deaths to wind turbine bird deaths.
But, “Wind good, wall bad!!”

“Just as long as the butterflies and swallows can get past it.”

...hordes of Central Americans, claiming to be butterflies and swallows, would then be represented by Soros-funded advocacy groups, demanding that the Government accommodate the special needs of their migratory patterns, with a clear flight path/getaway route.

Grampa,

I saw Foreman Mike of We Build the Wall at CPAC.

He reported that their river wall project (about 3.5 miles) near Mission, Texas is complete.

He has already moved on, and have begun preparing for their next project.

He was quite excited with the results from their first project, on the Eastern Foot of Mount Cristo Rey, on the Western edge of El Paso. Although their run of wall was not that long, the effect has been great there, when coupled with a bunch of detection technology.

Their El Paso barrier (Project #1) has been effective in channelizing infiltrators up over steep terrain, where they no longer have enough time to get away after being detected. Effective control has been dramatically improved, in what was an exceptionally hot spot for drug trafficking and illegal human smuggling.

They (We Build the Wall, Fisher Industries) have a very good support relationship not just with Border Patrol Officers there, but also the Military who have deployed to that segment of the Border, and they are remaining to be involved as a team member in achieving the mission of full operational control of the border.

Have not heard too much about three wall segments. This must be some or all of those 221 of existing adequate wall (for now).

Texas portion of the El Paso segment (some recently finished downtown by I-10), Tucson sector east from Sierra Vista mountain range maybe to Agua Prieta, and Otay Mesa.

Eventually gets replaced with the new wall system in Trump’s second term.

Trump sure in a rush to get the full 885 miles funded and on contract.

If Trump loses in November or wins but Rats get House and Senate then how good of an insurance policy to prevent rescinding of contracts stopping all construction? Is it breach of contract with heavy penalties against the Rat controlled govt. Will there be enough pain to force the contracts and 885 miles of wall to be completed?

Obama let all of the contracts that had been awarded in the Bush administration complete, but put an immediate halt to issuing any new contracts.

The first segment done under President Trump (Calexico), was just about to be contracted under Obama, when the freeze went into effect.

It used to be a done deal, that the Government would avoid cancellation penalties, but today’s Democratic Party has pulled out so many of the stops against misbehavior and abuse of office, that there are no guarantees anymore.

I guess that who controls the legislature would influence the decisions, as well as who wins the Presidency. The more checks on the Left that exist, the more pressure they would be under to conform to the norm.

Yeah, unfortunately the solution is political. Thank God we have Trump.

Pose the wall rescission in the debates. Don’t wait for the moderators. Trump directs that question and confronts the Rat mano a mano. Just like sanctuary cities. Get in their ugly hate-filled face.

These are clear contrasting issues and belong in the campaign.

One positive to team Trump pushing this is a shutdown in 2021 will not stop the wall. A GOP house could shove bills down the Rat’s President, or vice versa. Shutdown ensues. No matter how long the wall keeps marching on.

“a shutdown in 2021 will not stop the wall”

That’s true.

Once the contracts are awarded, and the funding is obligated, any political paralysis works in favor of the wall. It would require very strong, unusually powerful action to stop the wall at that point. The courts might even be used to impede efforts to cancel the contracts, like they are now used to impede the funding.

Another factor that systematically works in our favor, is that construction was prioritized by operational need. The miles are not equally important - far from it. The 14 miles in San Diego make a bigger impact, than 140 miles would in Big Bend National Park in Texas.

Completing 400 or more miles this year, is going to block over 80% of the existing illegal flow. There is going to be a qualitative change occurring this year, as the Trump barrier is built. So far, lots of relatively easy alternative crossing routes have been available, as some barrier has been built. When we get up to 300 or 400 miles of new Trump-style super barrier though, they start running out of easy routes. The very nature of crossing the border illegally will change for most people, from something like crossing a street, or taking a walk in the park, into more of a seriously time-consuming wilderness trek. Physically challenging - even life threatening.
