I used to shop once a month and stock up for the month.

Now I do it weekly, because it’s a pain in the you-know-what to try to do more than a week’s worth of groceries at self-checkout.

And what I’m noticing is that now even at peak there may be no more than three cashiers at any one time available.

If they offer the service, you may opt for the “shop from home”; we use it and don’t pay any fee because the bill is usually over $100. We don’t get it delivered (you can, if you want to pay more); we simply show up at a designated side entrance and they have your groceries waiting in a labeled cart. When you give your name, they go to the freezers and refrigerators and get labeled bags with your cold items.

Time is money, and if they charged $5 it would be well worth it to save the time (and aggravation) within the larger store.
