The experts are doing a good job of trying to explain “stuff happens”, i.e random deaths that will occur from anything, but they are outliers and uncommon. Difficult concepts to explain to the joe sixpack types.
Like many issues, the coronavirus threat requires integrative thinking, it involves multiple interacting forces and there are no easy black-white answers. This makes it difficult to explain and easy for the fake news media to distory and take out of context.
They are being as clear as possible under ambiguous circumstances.

I keep a small supply of masks for flu season because I have asthma. I’m not waiting until I’m sick to wear one in crowds. I nearly died with pneumonia twice from the flu. Yes, people like me need to wear one before we get sick. I have done it for years and haven’t been sick since I started and I don’t plan to stop to keep from pissing people off.

I don't believe so. People need to assess the risk and proceed accordingly. If people have a pre-existing condition, a mask can be a big help to inadvertently being a hand to their nose or mouth, and to "encouraging" people to keep distance.
