And he actually didn't. He rang the bell at a Spelling Bee when a student failed to spell what was written on the card... which was his job as judge. The spelling on the card had "potatoe" as an accepted alternate spelling (older form), and when the kid didn't add the "e", Quayle rang the bell. The mistaken bell was understandable, the kid wasn't removed from the Bee, and yet the MSM made a lifetime propaganda point against a sitting Vice President.

A NY boro official who knew him hold me that no one ever wanted to speak after Quayle did, he was that impressive. He was much misunderstood and underrated by the Left.
