I don't think it's because of any special capabilities on his part, but he's got the best CV: long-time Senator and Vice-President. The rest of them are too polarizing to run or too established in their current power: Schumer? Durbin? Kerry? Gore? Hoyer?

Yes, we want to give DJT the best shot at re-election, but if things go FUBAR we would be far better off with one of the others rats who will do less permanent damage than Comrade Bernie.
