It’s rare for employers these days to give negative references to former employees...for fear of lawsuits.A former employer might say “yes,he/she was outstanding” or,if the person was a dud,all they’re likely to say is the “he/she worked for us between 9/1/08 and 10/1/15”.Of course a potential new employer can take that as a negative reference while,at the same time,no court would accept it as one.
