Severe 'disruption': CDC vaccine expert warned her family to prepare for US coronavirus outbreak

It's not a matter of if the novel coronavirus will spread throughout the United States, but when, said Centers for Disease Control and Prevention vaccine expert Nancy Messonnier.

"Disruption to everyday life might be severe," Messonnier, who is the director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters Tuesday.

Messonnier said she told her children over breakfast that they will need to begin preparing for an escalated outbreak. Parents and caregivers, she said, should ask officials at their children's schools about plans for school dismissals, closures, and teleschool in case the virus spreads in their school districts.

"I contacted my local school superintendent this morning with exactly those questions," Messonnier said. "All of these questions can help you be better prepared for what might happen."

The point is to be aware of the POLITICAL agenda behind Messonnier's very vague doom statements.

The only thing that seems like a "vague doom statement" is this:

I guess it depends on how old the children are.

The other statements she made seem reasonable - regardless of who her sleazy brother is.

If you’re retired, I’d say prepare your pantry & freezer so that you only have to go out & mingle with the public when really necessary. And wash your hands often, especially after returning to your home from a public place.

Well as we have found it only takes one such statement. No reason to believe the same type of people that have been undermining Trump everywhere else aren’t also at the CDC. They’ve tried almost everything and although nothing has worked they’ve gotten away with crimes in the process. Why not try something related to this virus?

We went out of our way to not have any hint of precautions for HIV infections but we think we should go all out for this?

We’ve stocked up on canned soup, tissues, advil and toilet paper. If we both get sick, we won’t have to worry about having to go out for supplies. My husband also had a flu shot, which may or may not be helpful.

It seems some folks would prefer to keep their heads buried in the sand than believe that anyone related to an anti-Trump official could possibly make a credible statement. No one should be naive, but there is such a thing as the power of discernment.

In 1954 one of the kids in my elementary school was diagnosed with polio.
They closed the school for 3 weeks (it might have been 4).
When we returned, that kid was a cripple and a kid in another class had died.
Closing a school will be fought tooth and nail by the administrators. They get cash for every kid who is there and they don’t get cash for kids who are absent.

I just ordered a 90 day supply of my blood pressure and cholesterol meds. That’s my main concern given what I read about China supplying lots of our meds and precursor chemicals to manufacture meds in the US.

I need to get my non-prescription things, too - Vitamin B12 and 81 mg aspirin.

Yeah, those CDC folk are on top of this. They’ve gone from tests in 4 states to tests in 12 states.

Guessing closing airports at the outset wasn’t part of their thorough readiness over the years for an outbreak.
