IMO it's simply fear/cognitive dissonance. Having what you believe called into question combined with the idea that you have been made to look a fool...that will mess up anybody's preconceived views.

Cognitive Dissonance affects people in different ways, so I should be more sympathetic. I found out about FE inadvertently a year ago. I would never have delved as deeply as I have without that initial nudge on what I thought was an unrelated subject. Very liberating.
