Former Vice President Joe Biden has taken to describing his supposed arrest in South Africa at least three times in the past two weeks as he speaks to voters and seeks the Democratic presidential nomination.
Biden has been claiming that he was arrested in the 1970s by South African authorities while he sought to visit Nelson Mandela in prison, The New York Times reported Friday.
This day, 30 years ago, Nelson Mandela walked out of prison and entered into discussions about apartheid, Biden told supporters in South Carolina last week, according to the Times. I had the great honor of meeting him. I had the great honor of being arrested with our U.N. ambassador on the streets of Soweto trying to get to see him on Robbens Island.
Biden would have been a Democratic senator from Delaware at that time and any arrest would probably have been noted in the U.S. media, but the Times did not find any relevant references in its archives.

Joe Biden D. The D stands for Delusional. Synonymous with Democrat.
Brian Williams, Manti Te’o, and Hillary Clinton under a hail of gunfire memes incoming!
He was once married to Morgan Fairchild too. Yeah, that’s the ticket!!!
Someone needs to call him on this apparent lie. It may be a case of senility and that needs to made an issue.
Must have been the time he was on the Corn Pop Pilgrimage with Sniffy Pop
Slow Joe makes up stuff about South Africa that only exists in his mind.
He means South Dakota, and Nelson Rockefeller.
Open field running at it’s finest. Now, where did we put that video? Pretty lame sniper.
Put on MSNBC with Brian Williams after he loses.
Lunch Bucket Joe has always had a troubled relationship with truth.
fake but accurate
South African malarkey.
If he was even there, I’m going to guess that he was stopped & questioned, but never arrested.
Maybe he was arrested for whipping out a chain and threatening Corn Pop!
This lie I can handle a lot better than the smear he told about the man who was involved in the accident with his dead wife & daughter (he “drank his lunch”). He still needs to publicly answer for this.
bttt
Why would you go to Soweto to arrange a visit to Robben Island?
They are nowhere near each other.
Plus, I have my doubts that the SA authorities would have arrested or detained a sitting member of the U.S. congress along with the sitting ambassador...(I lived there for a little over 2 years during this time period).
He has embellished the story...
“Biden, who has struggled in early Democratic primary contests, added more context to the story when he shared that Mandela had visited him in Washington and thanked the Delaware Democrat for getting “arrested trying to see me.””
“Andrew Young, a former congressman and mayor of Atlanta who served as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations between 1977 and 1979 and extensively traveled with Biden, cast doubt on the story the former senator has been telling at campaign stops about the two of them being arrested on the streets of Johannesburg.
No, I was never arrested and I dont think he was, either, Young told the New York Times.
SO, it sounds like its just another one of Joe’s lies
