My ex-wife’s grandparents came to America from Tarnopol and Kiev after 1900.

The woman from Tarnopol listed her nationality as “Austrian” and her language as “Russian”, the man from Kiev answered “Russian” for both nationality and language.

When the woman died in Connecticut in 1992, she had a Russian Orthodox funeral.

Just two data points.

Respectfully, Ukraine and the Ukrainians who lived there have had a lot of history happen to them since the early 1900.
