2. VALUES THAT EXPLAIN 2020 FEMALE SUPPORT FOR TRUMP
Four distinct values, or underlying emotional planes, explain high-intensity support for President Trump among the females we interviewed: “Community,” “Peace of Mind,” “Relatable/Anti-Elitism,” and “Exuberance of Freedom (Empowerment).” (Fig. 1)
In 2016, women reported the same values, but identified different reasons that President Trump fulfilled them. Rather than requiring optimism, identified in 2016 along with the other four values to explain support, in 2020 women said their hopes had been confirmed. In fact, women said they are being proven right together with President Trump, solidifying a sense of team.
3. PRIORITIES FOR A TRUMP SECOND TERM
The top 3 priorities women said President Trump should deliver in a second term:
1. Border security/build wall
2. Continue to build the economy/ create jobs
3. Fix government corruption and drain the swamp
Women furthermore expressed a desire that Trump “hold politicians accountable for attacking him for three years,” an attitude rather than a policy and a theme that continued throughout the research interviews.
4. CONTRAST WITH 2016 AND RESEARCH IMPLICATIONS
Whereas in 2016, women had focused on indicators that suggested they could trust President Trump, in 2020 women reflected on how his tenure impacted how they live their lives.
They noted President Trump’s accessibility, greater-than-expected conservatism, leadership in how to fight, creativity in defining and framing a new Americanism, and proof points in the form of policy success. Female supporters included First Lady Melania Trump as one of Trump’s greatest assets as she, too, provides leadership for how to act in a hostile culture.
