It’s a lot worse than than 41%. A lot of jobs that “require a degree”, do not really require a degree. Many times, it’s just the company being elitist, thinking an indoctrinated staff with worthless degrees will somehow be better than one without.

Actually, this stems from so many lawsuits claiming that any form of an aptitude/intelligence test is discriminatory. The college degree has become a surrogate for an aptitude test.
Mostly its because of this!

the company is trying to minimize its risk.
The Degree Required is a little different when viewed from the perspective of employer and recruiter.
I have a dear friend who had a successful career doing pin point placements of people with skills in companies not just shoveling resumes
In the Job Placement world College/University is known Colloquially as “The New High School”
In other words, the value of a High School Diploma is worth in general nothing as they recognize it is primarily indoctrination versus Education. The hope is by going through 4 more years you may actually add value.
Having said that far too many expect to be trained in a discipline they never took or were exposed to in College and the companies are unwilling to fill the gap except for the most promising
It could be they are looking for people who have demonstrated a willingness to work. Maybe they want to distinguish future employees from underachievers.
No it’s what some call “degree inflation.”
The problem is that you got so many people now with bachelor degrees that it’s become what’s expected of an applicant. It is no longer impressive. In the 70s and 80s, a bachelor degree would get you the job. Today, that same degree for the same job will only maybe get you in the door for an interview...if lucky.
Many HR departments get flooded with resumes. So one way they knock it down is increase the job requirements. Jobs that required a HS diploma now require a associates degree. Jobs that required a Bachelors now require a Masters. And so on.... Employers can now demand that.
