US scientists announced Wednesday they had created the first 3D atomic scale map of the part of the novel coronavirus that attaches to and infects human cells, a critical step toward developing vaccine and treatments.
It came as the death toll from the COVID-19 virus jumped past 2,000, almost all of them in mainland China where 74,185 cases of infection have been confirmed since it first emerged in late December.
The team from the University of Texas at Austin and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) first studied the genetic code of the virus made publicly available by Chinese researchers, and used it to develop a stabilised sample of a key part called the spike protein.

BTW, Go Longhorns!
Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
Did I say, Go Longhorns!
nice but it has mutated at least once
Wow, amazing how quickly they can start from scratch and do that! Don't have a clue what's involved, but it sounds veeeery complicated.
What’s faster, how quickly Americans can create a vaccine or how quickly the Chinese can steal it?
Ha! I’m guessing the latter.
The Americans will need Chinese made ingredients to manufacture the vaccine.
That is crazy.

The bad news that it takes a atomic weapon to cure it.
Hook ‘em, Horns!
Here is a link to the full report from the lab.
Nicely done and quickly as well.
