Senate Democrats are privately acknowledging that President Trump will be very tough to beat in November if the economy stays strong and he draws on the substantial advantages of running as an incumbent.
Publicly, Democratic lawmakers are putting on a brave face, but behind closed doors anxiety is mounting over the unraveling of former Vice President Joe Bidens White House bid and the failure of impeachment to put a dent in Trumps approval ratings.
One of the chief concerns is that Trump, who has a virtually uncontested path to the Republican nomination, will have a big head start to prepare for the general election.
His reelection campaign is already spending heavily to reach out to voters on Facebook, and the Republican Party is solidly unified behind him.
Meanwhile, Sen. Bernie Sanderss (I-Vt.) victory in Tuesdays New Hampshire primary has made clear to some Senate Democrats that the partys primary is likely to drag on for months.
In particular, they worry the party will remain divided until the summer convention and fear a reprise of 2016, when lingering resentment among Sanderss supporters over the Democratic National Committees favoritism toward eventual nominee Hillary Clinton dampened voter turnout in the fall.
I hear comments all the time that after whats happened in the first two primaries we only have a 50-50 chance. Its not looking good, said a Democratic senator who requested anonymity to talk about the private concerns of colleagues.
One of the biggest surprises to lawmakers is the poor performance of Biden, who has performed well against Trump in hypothetical match-ups.
Though Biden led his Democratic rivals in national polls over the past several months, he finished in fourth place in the Iowa caucuses, with 15 percent of the vote, and dropped to fifth place in the New Hampshire primary, with a paltry 8 percent.
Other red flags are Trumps resilient approval rating, despite months of an impeachment inquiry followed by a weeks-long trial, and the amount of money his campaign is raising and spending.
Donald J. Trump: President for Life
Forget elections for awhile. No need
We have a good leader. No need for this clown show.
Or the clowns....
How about B.Hussein the other day trying to take credit for the economy and jobs 3 years after he left office, what an absolute putz. All you did for 8 YEARS mofo was empower our enemies while trying to kick the legs out from under the USA on every single level. It really disgusts me how he media in this country constantly bashes the hell out of Trump yet puts B.Hussein and his husband on a pedestal as if they are royalty.
Trump broke through the Prez barrier. There’s no going back.
50 - 50 chance???
Thats very funny.
Nope! Even good men are corrupted by unlimited power. Even constitutional restraints would be replaced by rule by fiat.
As much I despise the leftist ideology, I couldn’t live with myself if knew the person I supported committed atrocities.
Yes, the Democrats are in a panic. Right now, they have to choose between socialist Sanders or Authoritarian Bloomberg....neither of which are true Democrats!
But we need to be careful and not become over-confident. Our side tends to stay home when they are confident.

Gosh, if you didn’t know better, you’d almost think Impeachment was just cynical, politically-motivated BS....
“Our side tends to stay home when they are confident.”
Or disheartened.
The Democrats let an Independent/Socialist into their primary. They are also letting a former Republican mayor into their primary.
Dont get me wrong, I dont consider Bloomie a Republican.
They have no one but themselves to blame for this. Why? Its their primary voters who amongst the dumbest Americans walking the fruited plains.
I worry of what comes after? Their looking for Obama II.
Among the evil they will attempt will be 1) to crash the economy again like Soros likely did for Obama in ‘08, and 2) to steal enough votes like they thought they had done in 2016.
The Trump visit to the “NASCAR” Daytona 500 Race told the whole story....but, just in case there are still some Democrats who do not believe they will get wiped out on election day, catch the upcoming Trump rallies in Phoenix, Colorado Springs, Las Vegas, Charlotte and South Carolina over the nest few days!!! Case closed!!!
Well, not quite. There is a mittle bit that is not.
The first sentence says they need to kill the economy to win. They will do anything to hold power. Anything.
“Hey. Is that a light in the tunnel coming this way? What do you think? Is that a light? Should we worry it’s a train? Gee, it sure looks like a train. Should we worry? Maybe it’s just a light. What if it is a train?”
Agreed. “50-50”? I’ve thought that the Democrats, if they had any sense at all, would embrace the Trump agenda so they - unlike Obama - could actually take credit for some of it. Unfortunately - or fortunately, I guess - they’re overcome by an ideology that won’t allow them to contribute to our nation’s success.
As Napoleon said, “Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.”
