I can see the Trump campaign ads now. A helicopter flies over part of the the hundreds of miles of recently completed border wall while a voiceover says "Despite all the resistance, despite all the roadblocks and all the obstruction by the Democrat controlled House, the wall got built just the same. And Mexico paid for it all. President Trump...Promises made, promises kept."
“Wonder if this 121 miles includes the just completed 3 miles section on the Rio Grande by Fisher Construction (We Build the Wall).”
No, it only includes the Government funded Program.
Bingo!
Thanks for all your ongoing wall updates. You do GREAT work!

Beautiful.
This is a great answer and the reason why I asked on FR rather than doing the research myself. I would not have correctly identified the questions to ask or the relevant metrics for the answer. Thank you for posting such a comprehensive overview of the current state of and plans for our border protection.
What is the length of the entire border? I understand terrain makes some sections of the wall unnecessary. So maybe a better question would be—how long is the border where a new wall would be useful?
Yeah. I’d love to see a double wall system with a 2-3’ thick solid concrete wall north of this one with a fiercely controlled ‘no-man’s’ land in between.
I realize too low a % of the people are sufficiently motivated to ever make that happen.
The whole Southern border is 1,954 miles long. A huge analysis and planning effort recommended 1,100 miles of barrier.
It is unclear to me exactly how they are accounting for double layer barrier (1 or 2 miles of barrier, per mile of border?), and whether they are including the 221 miles of pre-existing barrier that has been assessed as effective (it seems they are).
Five days after taking office, President Trump issued Executive Order 13767, directing DHS to build the wall, and develop a comprehensive plan to achieve full operational control of the Southern border. That painstakingly developed and extensively reviewed plan recommended $25 billion over five years, 1,100 miles of barrier, several thousand additional full time positions and several technology Programs.
They analyzed (and prioritized) each segment of the border, to design a suite of protections that can achieve a reliably high probability of successful interception at that point. The keys are reliable detection, and ensuring enough time to respond effectively (intercept).
“Disappearing time” is a key variable in “Border Calculus”. In cities, fence jumpers can sometimes disappear in under a minute - into a shopping mall, into a car, or through backyards. In some rural areas, they can be tracked for days before they can get away. So barrier is just part of the equation - significantly just as a delaying device, and as a cleared, alarmed and surveiled space for detection.
Any barrier can be overcome with enough time and resources. People climb Mount Everest with ropes and ladders. The Trump Administration uses the phrase “Wall System” for the total package of capabilities (barrier, road, lighting, cameras, alarms, sensors) needed for fully staffed Border Patrol Officers to achieve full operational control.
The package varies from place to place, but when you get to very rural areas that are impassable to 4WD vehicles, and more than a days walk to roads, the delay afforded by having to stand up a ladder and drop a rope over a barrier becomes insignificant. Detection, tracking and interception ability are all that really matter out there.
Thanks for a great detailed post about the wall on the Mexican border. Interesting.
I remain with a strong bias toward a very hefty wall. I think it will end up needing to hinder or deter military incursions from Mexico with Chinese troops.
in bakersfield today trump claimed 122 miles built.
Sounds like a Conservative estimate, since they had 121 on the 14th:
